Gaza ceasefire under strain after exchange of fire between Israel and Hamas

The week-old ceasefire in Gaza came under strain on Sunday with Israel launching air strikes in the south of the enclave in response to what it said were “multiple attacks” by Hamas on its forces.

An Israeli military official said Hamas had carried out sniper and RPG attacks against its forces in an area to the east of the so-called yellow line, beyond which the Israel Defense Forces withdrew as part of the ceasefire deal.

Hamas said that it remained committed to the truce and accused Israel of using “flimsy pretexts” to justify violating it.

The incident is the most serious challenge to the ceasefire, which was brokered by US President Donald Trump as part of a broader plan to end the two-year war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
