Within hours, he had a plan to outdo Twitter"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjhz6f000ra7p42iwkdner@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Just over a year ago, Alphonzo Terrell received an email letting him know he\u2019d been laid off from Twitter.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkx00023b6ixkfwiy8z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Terrell \u2013 who\u2019d spent three years heading the platform\u2019s social and editorial teams \u2013 was among the roughly 3,700 employees let go from the company on Nov. 4, 2022, just a week after Elon Musk closed his $44 billion Twitter acquisition. That day, Terrell <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Phonz\/status\/1588594404092416000\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> that it was \u201ctime to build something new,\u201d and then got on the phone with friend and former colleague DeVaris Brown.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky00033b6i4t7zzzfy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI called him and I said, \u2018I think it\u2019s time to build and if we do this together, I think this can be really successful,\u2019\u201d Terrell, who\u2019s also known as \u201cPhonz\u201d online, told CNN in an interview in September.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky00043b6i40pid3m4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Within hours, Terrell and Brown had laid out plans to launch a new app capitalizing on their experience building communities online and thwarting some of the typical problems known to plague legacy social media platforms. They wanted it to be everything most social media struggles to be: positive, safe and inclusive. They named it Spill, a nod to the phrase \u201cspill the tea,\u201d which refers to sharing gossip or information.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky00053b6ivv3bk1h4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Terrell for years has been working at the intersection of tech, media and culture, largely behind the scenes. Now he\u2019s making a big bet on a concept tried by other social networks before, but which has consistently fallen short: Create a safe, rewarding and financially successful platform for Black, LGBTQ+ and other historically marginalized users.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky00063b6isw9brdqx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Those users, he says, often play an outsized role in driving online culture but are more likely to face harassment, like threats of violence or attacks on their identity, or to have others profit from their ideas. Spill is open to anyone, but by focusing on serving communities typically marginalized online, including with new content moderation and creator payment strategies, Terrell believes, the experience on the platform will be better for all of its users.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky00073b6i0fgsywu8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Spill clearly lays out that mission in its community guidelines, noting that it wants to create \u201can inclusive space that centers the experiences of the people that are typically left behind by social media platforms\u201d while also \u201cleaving plenty of space for hot takes and debate.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky00083b6i4bt1sb7g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Such a platform is even more important, Spill\u2019s leadership believes, in the wake of Musk\u2019s takeover at Twitter. Under the billionaire\u2019s leadership, policy updates, changes to content moderation practices and controversial statements from Musk himself have led to a reported rise in hate speech on the platform and left many users searching for alternatives. And as the user base of the platform now known as X splinters, so does Black Twitter, the community of Black users that was a big part of Twitter\u2019s growth and culture. Terrell wants to create a home for those users on Spill.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky00093b6izbs08rlo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cHaving worked at Twitter, I was very familiar with where the challenges of that platform were,\u201d said Terrell, who now serves as Spill\u2019s co-founder and CEO. \u201cOur core thesis with Spill was to focus on the culture drivers \u2014 Black women, the queer community, other culture-driving communities around the world that are often setting the tone, the trends, the lexicon, all the amazing magic that will happen on social platforms, but getting the lion\u2019s share of hate, abuse [and] not getting credited or rewarded the way they should for their contributions.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/clohjpaiy001s3b6i4yuowooq@published\" class=\"image portrait image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"GettyImages-1577421529.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"1.2256134051466188\" data-original-height=\"2048\" data-original-width=\"1671\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-1577421529.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"2048\" width=\"1671\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"2048\" width=\"1671\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"2048\" width=\"1671\" media=\"(min-width: 480px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"2048\" width=\"1671\" media=\"(max-width: 479px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000a3b6ivaurekye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But Spill is clear that it\u2019s not trying to recreate Twitter<s>,<\/s> or any other existing platform.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000b3b6i79ksatug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThe distinction here is that Spill is not trying to be Black Twitter 2.0,\u201d said April Reign, the equity advocate and #OscarsSoWhite creator who is now an advisor to Spill. \u201cI think that Black Twitter thrived \u2026 sometimes in spite of the platform itself. Spill is intentionally creating a foundation.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000c3b6i206c6o99@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Still, as legacy platforms have repeatedly learned the hard way, building a safe social network is not easy, especially as bad actors are becoming more sophisticated. Beyond safety, Spill also faces steep competition from the scores of new platforms that have launched in the year since Musk bought Twitter.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000d3b6ie21fa20b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI think the biggest challenge is making sure that we stay focused and block out any noise,\u201d Terrell said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much going on, and I think it\u2019s easy and tempting to sort of compare and be like, \u2018All these [platforms] are trying to do the same thing.\u2019 And we know we\u2019re doing something fundamentally different.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clohjm8ij001n3b6i9pfzusl2@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"you-have-to-understand-it-on-a-visceral-level\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    \u2018You have to understand it on a visceral level\u2019<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000f3b6irs542156@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      During his time at Twitter, Terrell effectively served as the voice of the brand, with his team in charge of, among other things, running the company\u2019s own accounts on the platform. Prior to Twitter, he worked in digital and social marketing for major brands such as HBO and Showtime.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000g3b6ilyca6uwq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In those roles, Terrell saw what kinds of content and creators drove conversations on the platform, which he says gives him a leg up in building a new social media app.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000h3b6i6wo3y5ny@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThe concept for Spill really goes back to something that I\u2019d seen throughout my career working in culture and technology and media,\u201d Terrell, who is based in Los Angeles, said. \u201cGoing back to the days of early digital platforms, whether it was Myspace, YouTube and then Vine, and more recently with TikTok, Black folks, especially Black women, over index on social media usage. More than any other identity group, they are consistently driving these trends \u2026 This is something that if you work in the space, you know.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000i3b6iumlk2nej@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But, he said, \u201cno platforms had really said, hey, we\u2019re going to build and center and focus on the challenges that face those communities from the beginning.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000j3b6ii9xguslt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Terrell bonded with co-founder Brown \u2014 a developer who\u2019s spent time at tech giants like Intel, Cisco and Microsoft and helped to found several tech startups \u2014 during their first-day orientation at Twitter<s>,<\/s> as two of the few people of color in their on-boarding group.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000k3b6ie1emzzso@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Since that first conversation about launching a new app last year, Terrell and Brown have built a powerhouse early team, including Reign and brand strategy and culture pro Kenya Parham, who is serving as Spill\u2019s vice president of community and partnerships.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000l3b6i9il9lsyt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Asked why he thinks other platforms have so far failed to create a consistently safe and inclusive experience for a wide range of diverse users, Terrell said: \u201cWell, let\u2019s talk about the obvious: Most of them weren\u2019t founded or created by people from marginalized groups or from underserved communities.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000m3b6iw1r7l6l3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cWe have been very intentional about the people building this platform and the audiences that we\u2019re centering from the beginning,\u201d he said. \u201cIn building for culture-driving communities, you have to understand it on a visceral level.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/clohjqbej001u3b6i5odx18pm@published\" class=\"image portrait users have already come up with a name for themselves: \u201cSpillionaires.\u201d And they\u2019ve developed community traditions, including a weekly movie viewing where users agree to watch the same film at the same time and post their reactions, a phenomenon that\u2019s come to be known as \u201clive spilling.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000p3b6iyrayglhe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThat\u2019s been one of the most exciting and special things that we\u2019ve seen happening so far is the community really taking ownership of the platform teaching us what they want,\u201d Terrell said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000q3b6igd8fbnjs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The app is designed to be something \u201cbetween a group chat \u2026 and a meme machine, so that you can create and express yourself in real time using visuals and using the native language of the internet,\u201d according to Terrell. The feed features posts with large, block text, often superimposed over images or GIFs; on certain posts, users can swipe through to view a series of images. At the top of users\u2019 feeds is the \u201cSpillboard,\u201d which highlights trending posts and is meant to help elevate creators on the app, Terrell said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000r3b6ibzr4d4xk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Spill takes design inspiration from its name, too. A teacup has replaced the heart as the platform\u2019s \u201clike\u201d button, and users can choose from a range of different colorways for the app, aptly named things like \u201cgreen tea\u201d and \u201chibiscus.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000s3b6ixaz6q7a1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And beyond its design choices, Terrell said Spill is aiming to cultivate a more positive, upbeat culture than Twitter and other social platforms.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000t3b6iu4zl0uoc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      It\u2019s a tack that other platforms have also tried to take, but it often proves difficult to carry out in practice, especially when they\u2019re reliant on boosting engagement to appease advertisers.\n  <\/p>\n<aside data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/pull-quote\/instances\/clohjvhsf00243b6ia3ns0vhe@published\" class=\"pull-quote\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-sig-quote-default\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M9.277 6l.536.937c-1.224 1.12-1.584 2.961-1.6 4.236v.016h3.569v7.781H4v-6.103l.006-.02C4.037 10.014 6.287 6.874 9.276 6zm9.079 0l.536.937c-1.224 1.12-1.584 2.961-1.6 4.236v.016h3.569v7.78h-7.782v-6.102l.006-.02c.031-2.833 2.281-5.973 5.27-6.847z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/p>\n<p class=\"pull-quote__text\" data-editable=\"text\">\n        We have had about 20 years of social media to learn from, and we wanted to take lessons from that and apply them going forward to really unleash like the next generation of social, which we think can be far more beneficial, entertaining, rewarding.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"pull-quote__attribution\" data-editable=\"attribution\">\n            Spill CEO Alphonzo Terrell\n        <\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000u3b6iu7t3efsl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to make a nice platform because the meanness of the internet generally, and social media\u00a0in particular, is not only a function of the engagement advertising business model \u2026 but also because of human behavior,\u201d said Paul Barrett, deputy director at the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights. \u201cI think we have enough experience with the internet now to know that people misbehave on the internet and are willing to do so at very little provocation.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000v3b6izur2zm8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Still, Spill\u2019s users are already connecting with its culture, which some say feels distinct Twitter, where inflammatory or polarizing content is often the most likely to gain strong engagement and be promoted by the platform\u2019s algorithms.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000w3b6itx7bjt7o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Since its iOS beta version launched in June, more than 200,000 users have signed up for Spill and another 200,000 have joined the waitlist. Spill in July hit the top of the Apple App Store\u2019s most popular social apps list. Spill\u2019s userbase remains far smaller than competitors like X (which has somewhere around 250 million daily active users) and Meta\u2019s Threads (which has 100 million monthly active users), but the sign-ups have exceeded Spill\u2019s initial expectations. The company\u2019s original goal had been to have 100,000 users by the end of 2023.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000x3b6i60edfr3n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Already, Terrell said, 44% of Spill\u2019s users posted on the platform within 12 hours of joining, and users create, on average, 14 posts (called \u201cspills\u201d) and comments per day.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhky000y3b6iykd1attx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Spill has also raised more than $5 million from investors including the Kapor Center for Social Impact and Mac Venture Capital. And the company, which for now plans to have a largely ad-based business, has already inked ad deals with the likes of Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime and VH1.\n  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clohjldbi001h3b6ix9roumg2@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"technically-sound-and-culturally-savvy\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    \u2018Technically sound and culturally savvy\u2019<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00103b6ir1n5s1j5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Even with the best intentions, keeping social networks safe is often easier said than done.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00113b6i70877cll@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Legacy social media platforms have repeatedly failed to anticipate how their products might be manipulated or misused until something goes wrong. Despite years of scrutiny and improvements by existing social platforms, women and people of color are still far more likely to say they\u2019d been harassed online for their gender or their race, according to a 2022 Pew Research Center report. Members of the LGBTQ+ community also face disproportionate abuse online.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00123b6iywyowi7f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And while Spill currently requires users to join a waitlist before being allowed on the app \u2014 which gives it some control over its user base \u2014 the platform will eventually be open to anyone, which could open the floodgates to potential bad actors. (The waitlist is currently in place to ensure Spill\u2019s technical infrastructure can support its user base. A certain number of users are let onto the app from the waitlist weekly, or if they are given by a friend one of three invite codes each user is granted when they join the platform.)\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00133b6i75uu6coz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      That\u2019s why, Terrell said, Spill is working to build safety into the app from day one.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00143b6ic52qwdjs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Among its efforts to improve the experience for users, the company is completely rethinking content moderation. But Terrell hopes that by involving the people most likely to face abuse online in its training, Spill\u2019s model will be a step in the right direction.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00163b6id88sopk3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cSo Black folks, queer folks, other groups that face these challenges<s>,<\/s> are inputting into this model so that it can be extremely technically sound and also culturally savvy, which we really haven\u2019t seen before,\u201d Terrell said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00173b6ivi4cp8wr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Spill\u2019s community guidelines prohibit behaviors such as promoting hate based on protected characteristics including race and gender, violence and extremism and encouraging self-harm. The platform also says in its community guidelines that while \u201ccriticism and holding people accountable for their actions is an essential part of how communities operate,\u201d users may not \u201corganize, incite, or engage in repeated abusive conduct targeting a specific person or group of people.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00183b6ihuoxpq8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Violat\ufeffors of Spill\u2019s rules, including posting dangerous content such as violent threats, will be removed and could result in account bans, according to the platform\u2019s rules. Less severe rules violations, such as \u201cposting a misleading rumor,\u201d could result in a user having some of the app\u2019s features (like the ability to \u201cquote\u201d and reshare other posts) disabled, Spill says. And repeat violators of the platform\u2019s rules will also risk having their accounts removed.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz00193b6ioz9hlkwd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The company is also working on a system to better track and reward users who create viral trends or memes. The move is an effort to rectify the ongoing phenomenon elsewhere online where creators of popular content \u2014 often Black women \u2014 don\u2019t get credit for their ideas while bigger, more popular creators profit from them. (One of the most prominent recent examples of this issue was Georgia teen Jalaiah Harmon, who created the Renegade, which became one of the internet\u2019s most viral dances, but was virtually unknown until tech reporter Taylor Lorenz profiled her in the New York Times.)\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz001a3b6iih6s1in5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cWe have had about 20 years of social media to learn from, and we wanted to take lessons from that and apply them going forward to really unleash the next generation of social, which we think can be far more beneficial, entertaining, rewarding,\u201d Terrell said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz001b3b6i3jq9qdqj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Investors will also be looking for that next-gen social platform to be profitable, and the potential is there for a company that\u2019s catering to the users making the most engaging content on the internet, said Latoya Lee, an assistant professor at California State University Fullerton who has studied Black Twitter.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz001c3b6i23cryo4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cA lot of the content that made Twitter what it is, or what it was, came from Black Twitter,\u201d Lee said, adding that if Spill succeeds in addressing the shortcomings of Twitter, as well as other existing social networks, \u201cI think that there\u2019s lots of opportunity for the platform to grow and for it to attract content creators.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz001d3b6i42kl1wmd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In the meantime, Spill is also working to set itself apart from competitor platforms that also emerged in the wake of Musk\u2019s Twitter takeover, including Mastodon, Bluesky and  Threads. What\u2019s more, Spill is staying focused on a targeted audience at a time when many larger platforms are increasingly focused on trying to provide something for anyone.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clohjkhkz001e3b6izup4m64u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI think it\u2019s definitely radical,\u201d Terrell said.
