{"id":10693,"date":"2023-11-07T16:02:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-07T16:02:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/portuguese-pm-antonio-costa-resigns-as-corruption-crisis-explodes\/"},"modified":"2023-11-07T16:02:52","modified_gmt":"2023-11-07T16:02:52","slug":"portuguese-pm-antonio-costa-resigns-as-corruption-crisis-explodes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=10693","title":{"rendered":"Portuguese PM Ant\u00f3nio Costa resigns as corruption crisis explodes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=928a5144-749a-4e21-b52d-c01c5d52a46c\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Portuguese prime minister Ant\u00f3nio Costa resigned hours after prosecutors issued arrest warrants and raided government buildings in a corruption investigation that reached his inner circle.<\/p>\n<p>Costa, a Socialist who has led Portugal since 2015, said on Tuesday he would step down after prosecutors revealed the full extent of an investigation into possible crimes of corruption, malfeasance and influence peddling among holders of public office.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said the potential wrongdoing related to several high-profile business ventures, including lithium mining projects that were central to both Portugal\u2019s long-term economic plans and the supply of raw material for Europe\u2019s electric vehicle industry.<\/p>\n<p>They said that in the course of their investigations suspects had invoked the \u201cname and authority\u201d of the prime minister and alleged he had made interventions to \u201cunblock procedures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Costa said he had not been aware of the investigation and had a clear conscience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut regardless of this, the dignity of the role of prime minister and the trust that the Portuguese people have in institutions are absolutely incompatible with [having] a prime minister who faces suspicions about his integrity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for V\u00edtor Esc\u00e1ria, Costa\u2019s chief of staff and confidant, and said they were making infrastructure minister Jo\u00e3o Galamba a formal suspect\u00a0as they carried out a total of 43 raids on government buildings and homes.<\/p>\n<p>Costa\u2019s resignation shifts the onus to Portugal\u2019s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, a former leader of the opposition Social Democrats, who accepted Costa\u2019s resignation and must now decide whether to dissolve parliament and call elections or appoint another prime minister. Until then, Costa will remain as a caretaker leader.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s office said Rebelo de Sousa would talk to political party leaders on Wednesday, then speak to the country on Thursday after a meeting of the state council, a group of his advisers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to run again to be prime minister,\u201d Costa said. \u201cIt is a stage of my life that is finished.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Costa added: \u201cI am available to co-operate with the justice system. I want to say that I am not conscious of having done any illegal act or even any reprehensible act\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009I leave with my head held high and with a clear conscience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the projects under investigation are a hydrogen production plant and the construction of a data centre, both in the town of Sines. Prosecutors also issued arrest warrants for the mayor of Sines and two directors of a company involved in the data centre.<\/p>\n<p>Rui Rocha, the head of Liberal Initiative, a small right-wing opposition party, said earlier in the day that Portugal was \u201cengulfed in rot\u201d as he called on Costa to resign.<\/p>\n<p>Costa was re-elected with an absolute majority in 2022.
