{"id":10984,"date":"2023-11-08T08:05:39","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T08:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/us-lends-553mn-to-majority-adani-owned-port-in-sri-lanka\/"},"modified":"2023-11-08T08:05:39","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T08:05:39","slug":"us-lends-553mn-to-majority-adani-owned-port-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=10984","title":{"rendered":"US lends $553mn to majority Adani-owned port in Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=f5111240-7d00-426e-b7ef-d340c7ec59f5\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The US will lend $553mn for the development of a container terminal in Sri Lanka operated by Indian tycoon Gautam Adani as Washington works to counter China\u2019s influence in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone holds a 51 per cent stake in Colombo\u2019s west container terminal, which it is developing with Sri Lankan conglomerate John Keells Holdings and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.<\/p>\n<p>The US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) held a ceremony on Wednesday in Colombo to publicise the $553mn commitment. <\/p>\n<p>The deal is an example of how countries such as the US and India are responding to a debt crisis in Sri Lanka, which last year became the first Asia-Pacific country in more than two decades to default on its foreign debts. China is the largest bilateral creditor to Sri Lanka, which has over the past decade become a major participant in Beijing\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>China has financed nearly 300 projects on the island since 2000, according to the AidData lab at William &amp; Mary college, providing aid and credit totalling more than $20bn. In 2017, the island also handed control of its southern Hambantota port to China on a 99-year lease.<\/p>\n<p>But the US and India, who want to counter China\u2019s influence in the Asia Pacific region, have been trying to catch up. The agency\u2019s investment in Sri Lanka has climbed from $20mn four years ago to \u201calmost $1 billion\u201d, the US DFC posted on X, the site formerly known as Twitter. Sri Lanka has become \u201cDFC\u2019s second-largest market in the entire Indo-Pacific region\u201d, the country\u2019s US ambassador Julie Chung posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>DFC chief executive Scott Nathan met with top officials in Sri Lanka this week, including President Ranil Wickremesinghe, to discuss investment opportunities. The lender\u2019s website says it works to advance \u201cU.S. foreign policy\u201d as well global development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nathan said that the private sector loan to the Adani-led terminal consortium \u201cwill expand [the terminal\u2019s] shipping capacity, creating greater prosperity for Sri Lanka \u2014 without adding to sovereign debt \u2014 while at the same time strengthening the position of our allies across the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal \u201creflects growing strategic trust between India and the United States to co-operate to offer alternatives to China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative\u201d, said Constantino Xavier, a fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Progress think-tank in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>It is \u201cpart of a larger Indian regional connectivity strategy that ropes in the private sector and strategic partners like the US, Japan and European Union\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Western and Indian critics have argued that excessive borrowing from China exacerbated Sri Lanka\u2019s crisis. Sri Lanka is currently in talks with creditors, including India and China, to restructure its overseas debt, which totals around $40bn. Last month it announced a preliminary restructuring deal with the Export-Import Bank of China, but is yet to agree terms with other creditors such as India, Japan and France. <\/p>\n<p>Anushka Wijesinha, an economist in Colombo, said that investment at the port was \u201clong overdue\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009to increase capacity and remain competitive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The US\u2019s financial backing also comes as the billionaire Adani works to push past allegations of stock market manipulation and accounting fraud made by New York-based short seller Hindenburg Research in January. Adani strongly refutes the accusations.<\/p>\n<p>The financing is \u201ca reaffirmation by the international community of our vision, our capabilities and our governance,\u201d Karan Adani, Adani Ports chief executive, said in a speech in Colombo on Wednesday.
