{"id":1159,"date":"2023-10-13T20:04:18","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T20:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/markets\/dow-turns-lower-as-u-s-stocks-fall-amid-middle-east-tensions\/"},"modified":"2023-10-13T20:04:19","modified_gmt":"2023-10-13T20:04:19","slug":"dow-turns-lower-as-u-s-stocks-fall-amid-middle-east-tensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=1159","title":{"rendered":"Dow turns lower as U.S. stocks fall amid Middle East tensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002612142\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stocks were lower Friday heading toward the closing bell, giving up their opening gains on geopolitical fears and as a consumer-sentiment survey showed a jump in inflation expectations.<\/p>\n<h2>How are stock indexes trading?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA<br \/>\n       was down almost 6 points, or less than 0.1%, at around 33,626 in choppy trade. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX<br \/>\n       shed 27 points, or 0.6%, to trade around 4,323.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP<br \/>\n       dropped almost 175 points, or 1.3%, to about 13,400. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the week, the Dow was heading for a gain of 0.7%, while the S&amp;P 500 was on pace to rise 0.3% and the Nasdaq was track to slip 0.2%, according to FactSet data, at last check.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets?<\/h2>\n<p>U.S. stocks were trading mostly lower Friday afternoon as heightened geopolitical tensions rattled investors.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure came despite the Dow Jones Industrial Average being buoyed in part by by stronger-than-expected earnings from big Wall Street banks. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing into the weekend, it looks as if there\u2019s safe-haven buying going on,\u201d said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial, in a phone interview Friday, pointing to investors turning to Treasurys and gold amid worries the conflict in the Middle East risks broadening.<\/p>\n<p>The market is weighing the possibility that Israel may \u201cunleash a massive incursion into Gaza,\u201d she said. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to show up on\u00a0Monday morning and everything has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Israel\u2019s military has ordered more than 1 million people to leave Gaza, raising fears a ground offensive could be under way soon, escalating tensions in the Middle East.  <\/p>\n<p>Buying of U.S. Treasurys on Friday has sent yields lower, with 10-year Treasury rates<br \/>\n        BX:TMUBMUSD10Y<br \/>\n       falling 8.2 basis points to 4.628%, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Gold prices<br \/>\n        GC00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210034565\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+3.12%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       climbed sharply, with the December contract<br \/>\n        GCZ23,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210039381\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+3.12%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       settling 3.1% higher at $1,941.50 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a war trade,\u201d said Jay Hatfield, chief executive officer and portfolio manager at Infrastructure Capital Advisors, during a phone interview with MarketWatch. \u201cInvestors are selling tech, buying energy, buying bonds and buying gold.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Oil prices have surged amid fears over the war in the Middle East, with West Texas Intermediate crude<br \/>\n        CL00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209723049\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+5.70%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rising almost 6% on Friday to settle at $87.69 a barrel. U.S. tightening sanctions on Russian crude sales also helped boost oil prices.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond geopolitical tensions, the University of Michigan\u2019s latest reading on consumer sentiment, released Friday morning shortly after the stock market\u2019s open, also created some concern in markets. The survey data showed consumers\u2019 one-year inflation expectations rising to 3.8%, from 3.2% in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something the Fed does not want to see,\u201d said Krosby. Food and gasoline price remain elevated and that\u2019s \u201cstarting to hit the consumer\u2019s view of future inflation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve has been trying to bring down inflation by tightening monetary policy through interest-rate hikes. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. stocks had opened higher on Friday, after major Wall Street banks, including JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.<br \/>\n        JPM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205971034\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.56%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Citigroup Inc.<br \/>\n        C,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207741460\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.20%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Wells Fargo &amp;  Co.<br \/>\n        WFC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203790192\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.10%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       reported earnings for the third quarter that were stronger than analysts estimated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read: <\/strong>JPMorgan Chase\u2019s Q3 profit rises by 35%, bolstered by increased interest income as consumers and businesses \u2018generally remain healthy\u2019<\/p>\n<p>JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said the bank delivered \u201csolid\u201d results amid a tough macroeconomic backdrop now complicated by another war. But he also delivered some more ominous commentary about markets and the economy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may be the most dangerous time the world has seen in decades,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500\u2019s financials sector<br \/>\n        XX:SP500.40<br \/>\n       was edging higher Friday afternoon, while shares of JPMorgan and Wells Fargo posted sharp gains, according to FactSet data, at last check.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the earnings season continues to surprise to the upside and delivers solid earnings reports with positive guidance, it should be extremely helpful for the market,\u201d said Krosby.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the S&amp;P 500 index looks expensive and vulnerable to a decline in the near term as the Fed\u2019s monetary tightening is still working through the U.S. economy, according to Jason Pride, chief of investment strategy and research at Glenmede.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s \u201cstill a greater than 50% chance of a recession in the back half of this year and into the beginning of next year,\u201d Pride said in a phone interview on Friday, citing  his base case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read: <\/strong>Q3 earnings are here: S&amp;P 500 heads toward \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207946232\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.38%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      <strong> <\/strong>shares were lower after its earnings report.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>UnitedHealth Group Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        UNH,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210453738\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.61%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares were up sharply after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings for the third quarter.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Novo Nordisk<\/strong><br \/>\n        NVO,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203484366\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.95%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0shares rallied after it boosted its full-year 2023 profit and sales outlook, reflecting heightened expectations for Ozempic and Wegovy sales.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       <strong>Dollar General Corp.<\/strong> shares<br \/>\n        DG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200691429\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+9.16%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       jumped after the dollar-store chain said that Todd Vasos was returning as chief executive after retiring less than a year ago.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Microsoft Corp. <\/strong><br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.04%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares slipped after U.K. regulators on Friday gave Microsoft Corp. the go-ahead for the tech giant\u2019s $68.7 billion acquisition of videogame holding company, Activision Blizzard, ending a long saga.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Barbara Kollmeyer contributed to this
