Frightened residents fled Gaza City after Israel told more than 1mn people to leave the area in a move Palestinians denounced as a \u201cforced displacement\u201d and which the UN said would be \u201ccalamitous\u201d.<\/p>\n

Thousands were on the move on Friday, departing their homes in overcrowded minibuses, in cars and on foot as they contended with fuel shortages and destroyed roads.<\/p>\n

The warning for about half of the Gaza Strip\u2019s population to relocate from the north to the south of the enclave came with what the UN said was a 24-hour deadline, as Israel maintained its siege and bombardment of the 40km-long territory, particularly its main city.<\/p>\n

Israel declared war on Hamas and launched air strikes on Gaza after fighters belonging to the Palestinian militant group crossed the border on Saturday, killing more than 1,300 civilians and soldiers and kidnapping dozens more. <\/p>\n

On Friday evening, the Israeli military said it had carried out small-scale localised raids into Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, \u201cto eliminate the threat of terrorists and weapons in the area and locate hostages\u201d.<\/p>\n

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the war with Hamas would \u201ctake time\u201d as Israeli forces conducted further strikes on Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re striking our enemies with unprecedented power,\u201d Netanyahu said in a rare Shabbat address. \u201cThis is only the beginning. Our enemies are only starting to pay the price.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day the Israel Defense Forces had dropped leaflets calling on Gaza residents to leave. \u201cCivilians of Gaza City, evacuate south for your own safety and the safety of your families and distance yourself from Hamas terrorists who are using you as human shields,\u201d the leaflets said.<\/p>\n

About 1.1mn of Gaza\u2019s population of more than 2mn live in the northern part of the enclave, which includes Gaza City and its outskirts. <\/p>\n

The IDF added: \u201cThis evacuation is for your own safety. You will be able to return to Gaza City only when another announcement permitting it is made.\u201d<\/p>\n

Palestinian authorities say that so far about 1,800 people have died in Gaza because of the Israeli bombardment. <\/p>\n

The UN said on Friday that more than 423,000 people had already been internally displaced in Gaza \u2014 up from 187,000 three days ago.<\/p>\n

Nevine Ahmed, a mother of six, said she was heading to her family home in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, but that it also had been under bombardment. <\/p>\n

\u201cI fear Israel may be pushing us to the south, then they would bomb us to force us to storm the border into Egypt,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Speaking as he met US secretary of state Antony Blinken in Jordan, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas said a \u201cforced displacement\u201d would amount to a \u201csecond Nakba<\/em>\u201d, or catastrophe.<\/p>\n

The term is used by Palestinians to refer to Israel\u2019s foundation in 1948, when hundreds of thousands were expelled or fled. <\/p>\n

In the comments, reported by the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Abbas also called for humanitarian corridors to Gaza and an \u201cimmediate end to the Israeli aggression\u201d.<\/p>\n

Blinken said during a later stop in Doha that he was talking to Israel and other governments about possible \u201csafe areas\u201d in Gaza for civilians.<\/p>\n

Amid confusion in the enclave, queues formed in front of petrol stations, which were later shut due to lack of fuel. With much of the city reduced to rubble, many streets are impassable for cars and traffic jams soon formed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not leave, we will stay together,\u201d said Om Saher, who lives in Beit Lahia in the north of Gaza with four of her married children and their families. \u201cEither we live together or we die together. We will not be displaced again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The territory\u2019s interior ministry told people to remain where they were, even as the IDF said it would \u201ccontinue to operate significantly in Gaza City\u201d in coming days.<\/p>\n

John Kirby, a White House spokesman, accused Hamas of \u201cputting up roadblocks so that people can\u2019t get out\u201d.<\/p>\n

Some in the region took Friday\u2019s warning, a week into the Israel-Hamas war, as a sign of an imminent ground operation focused on the densely populated city and the north of the enclave. <\/p>\n

Israel says it has hit 2,687 targets in Gaza and that more than 6,000 rockets have been fired from the territory.<\/p>\n

The UN said its humanitarian and security teams had been informed by \u201cliaison officers in the Israeli military that the entire population of Gaza north of Wadi Gaza [an area in the centre of the territory] should relocate to southern Gaza within the next 24 hours\u201d.<\/p>\n

But an Israeli military official did not confirm that there was a 24-hour deadline, adding that moving would \u201ctake time\u201d.<\/p>\n

The UN said Israel\u2019s call applied to its own staff in Gaza and to tens of thousands of displaced people sheltering in UN facilities, including schools, health centres and clinics. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe United Nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences,\u201d said spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric, warning that it could \u201ctransform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation\u201d.<\/p>\n

The IDF said it was \u201ccontrolling\u201d its attacks to provide a \u201csafe way\u201d for evacuation.<\/p>\n

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an IDF spokesperson, said: \u201cAs much as we can \u2014 it\u2019s a war zone \u2014 we will try to make sure that it happens safely.\u201d<\/p>\n

He accused Hamas of a \u201ccrime against humanity\u201d by holding dozens of hostages in Gaza \u2014 including Israelis, and American and European citizens.<\/p>\n

The UN\u2019s agency for Palestinian relief, UNRWA, called on Israel to protect the 270,000 people taking refuge in its shelters, adding that international humanitarian law meant they must \u201cnever come under attack\u201d.<\/p>\n

The agency said Gaza City was its centre of operations but that it was relocating some staff to the south to allow it \u201cto continue operations and services to people in need in Gaza\u201d.<\/p>\n

Gaza\u2019s residents are prevented from leaving the enclave by restrictions imposed by Israel and Egypt and the IDF blockade. Israel has also cut water, power and fuel supplies.<\/p>\n

The territory\u2019s health authority released photos of what appeared to be gravely injured children in crowded hospital conditions, some on the floor. Gaza\u2019s main power station ran out of fuel this week.<\/p>\n

Talks with Egypt to open a humanitarian corridor or a hub for refugees on its side of the border with Gaza have so far failed, a western diplomat involved in the negotiations said. <\/p>\n
