{"id":12013,"date":"2023-11-10T04:13:51","date_gmt":"2023-11-10T04:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/jezebel-shuts-down-lays-off-staff-in-excruciating-decision-parent-company-says\/"},"modified":"2023-11-10T04:13:52","modified_gmt":"2023-11-10T04:13:52","slug":"jezebel-shuts-down-lays-off-staff-in-excruciating-decision-parent-company-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=12013","title":{"rendered":"Jezebel shuts down, lays off staff in \u2018excruciating\u2019 decision, parent company says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clorclin4000rg7nrcr1p0bd7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Jezebel, the punchy feminist blog with an outsized influence on internet culture, will suspend operations and lay off its staff effective immediately, its parent company G\/O Media said Thursday as it announced broader restructuring in its portfolio of digital news outlets.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clordyeyh000c3j6fwg9qmp2l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Jim Spanfeller, chief executive of G\/O Media, said in a memo to staff obtained by CNN that the company had tried to sell the publication, but that after talks with two dozen potential buyers, \u201cwe could not find Jez a new home.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clordyeyh000d3j6fmjf2dn16@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cAs of this week we are making the very, very difficult decision to suspend publication of Jezebel,\u201d Spanfeller\u00a0said. \u201cFew decisions over the course of my career have been as excruciating, and I want to make clear this is in NO WAY a reflection on the Jezebel editorial team.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clordyeyh000e3j6ffm6v7tpm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Spanfeller said he has not \u201cgiven up\u201d on finding a buyer for Jezebel, which he described as having a \u201cstoried legacy as the website that changed women\u2019s media forever.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clordyeyh000f3j6fvkfff6hf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Spanfeller additionally announced Thursday that G\/O would undergo broader restructuring that will result in layoffs.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clordyeyi000g3j6fqkd5tgre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cWe have been operating over the last few quarters with an eye towards efficiency and being budget conscious. I had been hoping that by doing so we could see our way through these dark times in our industry,\u201d he told employees in his memo. \u201cAnd indeed, we held out far longer than most. But we can hold out no longer.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clordyeyi000h3j6fywkbrwyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In total, the suspension of Jezebel\u2019s operations and other restructuring actions will \u201cresult in the departure of 23 editorial staffers,\u201d Spanfeller said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clordyeyi000i3j6ffecnebvv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The cuts come as the broader media industry continues to struggle with a weak advertising climate. Vice also announced cuts to its news team on Thursday. And across the media landscape, cost cutting and layoffs have been rampant over the past year.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clordyeyi000j3j6f86e6c94p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n
