{"id":13106,"date":"2023-11-19T17:05:54","date_gmt":"2023-11-19T17:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/us-and-qatar-say-deal-closer-over-hamas-hostages\/"},"modified":"2023-11-19T17:05:54","modified_gmt":"2023-11-19T17:05:54","slug":"us-and-qatar-say-deal-closer-over-hamas-hostages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=13106","title":{"rendered":"US and Qatar say deal closer over Hamas hostages"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=a83f9ee7-8386-4996-b871-3d6c5a77c324\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The US and Qatar signalled on Sunday that they were edging closer to a deal to release a significant number of civilian hostages held by Hamas in the besieged Gaza Strip. <\/p>\n<p>Any breakthrough is expected to lead to a multi-day pause in Israel\u2019s offensive on Gaza and an increase of urgently needed aid into the coastal enclave that is enduring a deepening humanitarian crisis. <\/p>\n<p>The plight of about 240 hostages has exacerbated the trauma of Israelis, and become a politically sensitive issue for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he pushes ahead with the offensive against Hamas, while families of the captives have pressured his government to do more to secure their freedom. <\/p>\n<p>US deputy national security adviser Jonathan Finer said Washington believed it was \u201ccloser than we have been to reaching a final agreement\u201d, adding that many areas of difference that \u201cpreviously existed have been narrowed\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration and Israel have resisted mounting calls for a ceasefire in the war with Hamas, instead insisting any pause in the Israeli air and land offensive on Gaza would only come after the Palestinian Islamist group agrees to free a large number of the civilian captives seized in its October 7 attack. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2288\" height=\"1526\"><\/source><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/https:\/\/d1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net\/production\/404d1192-babb-4031-b3c8-99d12f63a4b4.jpg\" alt=\"Protesters outside the prime minister\u2019s office in Jerusalem call for the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip\" data-image-type=\"image\" width=\"2288\" height=\"1526\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Protesters outside the prime minister\u2019s office in Jerusalem call for the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Gil Cohen-Magen\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Talks to secure the release of civilian captives are being facilitated with Qatar, a US ally that hosts Hamas\u2019s political office in Doha. Negotiators have previously believed they were close to securing a deal, only for the talks to stall over disagreements between Israel and Hamas. <\/p>\n<p>Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told reporters in Doha on Sunday that \u201cthere has been good progress in the past few days\u201d. He added that minor obstacles remained between Israel and Hamas agreeing a deal.<\/p>\n<p>Brett McGurk, the White House\u2019s Middle East adviser, told a conference in Bahrain on Saturday that a pause in Israel\u2019s assault on Gaza and surge in humanitarian relief and fuel into the strip \u201cwill come when hostages are released\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has laid siege to Gaza and its forces have moved deeper into the strip since it launched its offensive after Hamas killed about 1,200 people in its October 7 attack on southern Israel, according to Israeli officials. <\/p>\n<p>Almost 11,500 people have been killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza, according to Palestinian officials, while UN officials have warned of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the strip that is home to 2.3mn people, amid crippling shortages of food, water, fuel and medicine. <\/p>\n<p>The deal to secure the release of a large number of civilian hostages held by Hamas would lead to Israel pausing its offensive for several days and allow the delivering of more aid into the strip. Hamas also wants a number of Palestinian women and children held in Israeli prisons to be released. <\/p>\n<p>People close to the negotiations have been saying that the talks are progressing, but keep faltering over details. These include Hamas\u2019s demand for a five-day pause, Israel\u2019s demand for it be shorter, and the question of where released Palestinian prisoners would go, a person briefed on the negotiations said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mantra that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed really does apply, and we do not yet have an agreement in place,\u201d Finer told CBS\u2019s Face the Nation on Sunday. \u201cAnd so until that is the case, you know, we\u2019re not going to lay out all the details in public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Herzog, Israel\u2019s ambassador to the US, told ABC\u2019s <em>This Week<\/em> programme that he was hopeful that a significant number of hostages could be released by Hamas \u201cin coming days\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a83f9ee7-8386-4996-b871-3d6c5a77c324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
