With a busy transcontinental network of 254,000 miles of tracks at its height a little over a century ago, America moved on trains.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp7etp5j00023b6idz1unvlj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Today, the United States\u2019 passenger rail system is an echo of its former self, with swathes of the network unused or surrendered to freight. Over the last century, the United States shifted its focus \u00ad\u2013 and investments \u00ad\u2013 away from passenger railroads and toward travel by cars and planes.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp7etp5j00033b6ihd9xtuyn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      That may be starting to change. Efforts to revive railroad travel in the US have recently picked up steam amid a push to lower emissions: Earlier this month, the Biden administration announced that the federal government would pump $16 billion into improving the nation\u2019s busiest rail line, Amtrak\u2019s Northeast Corridor, which runs from Boston to Washington, D.C.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpcusayi000i2a6827g4tyij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Brightline, the country\u2019s only privately owned and operated intercity railroad, opened its completed train line between Orlando and Miami in September. Its roughly three-hour run shaves about an hour off of drive time. California has invested heavily in a route<strong> <\/strong>from Los Angeles to San Francisco.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpcu62rl000g2a68nd8f3mi8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The time might be right for a railroad renaissance. The Swedish \u201cflyskam\u201d movement, which translates to \u201cflight shame,\u201d has grown worldwide among people seeking to diminish their carbon footprints. The transportation sector emits the highest amount of greenhouse gas of all US sectors \u2013 and the US Department of Transportation has said that rail could play an essential role in reducing emissions.\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/clpa4h56100013b6hoghwn96r@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"GettyImages-1711501535.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6655\" data-original-height=\"1331\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-1711501535.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 480px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(max-width: 479px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp7etp5j00043b6izyo4xqip@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Traveling by train is not entirely out of fashion in the US. Some of the nation\u2019s greatest fortunes \u2013 those of JP Morgan, Jay Gould, Cornelius Vanderbilt, among others &#8211; were built on the rails. By the 1860s, private US companies, with the help of government cash and land grants, were constructing the country\u2019s first transcontinental railroad. It connected the United States\u2019 existing eastern rail network all the way to San Francisco<strong> <\/strong>in 1869. At the time, it was the longest railroad in the world and helped the US population expand westward, railway expert Christian Wolmar wrote in his 2012 book, \u201cThe Great Railroad Revolution.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpcvwjyt000w2a68t9rnjofh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In exchange for government subsidies, rail carriers were required to provide passenger service.<strong> <\/strong>Train travel became ubiquitous, Wolmar notes, and by the 1900s, almost every American lived within easy access to a train station.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp7etp5j00083b6iq6ui9yj8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Today, much of the train tracks once used by passengers are now used exclusively by freight trains \u00ad\u2013 and for many Americans, train travel isn\u2019t even a consideration. Those efforts accelerated under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpca5dto00002a68f7w9199v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      According to the website of the United States Senate, which provides a history of legislation, Eisenhower\u2019s interest in the US highway system dated back to his participation in the Army\u2019s first cross-country motor convoy in 1919. It gave him first-hand knowledge of the poor quality of America\u2019s roads. In his State of the Union message in 1954, he proposed an American interstate highway system, which he justified as a national defense program. Railroad companies invested heavily in newer modern equipment after World War II just as the postwar baby boom and suburban living grew in popularity. Hammond said: \u201cRailroads sunk a lot of money into modernizing the passenger network right at the wrong time.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp7etp5j000f3b6iifdjqjrx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      By the early 1970s, passenger rail service had become a drag on private companies\u2019 bottom lines amid low ridership, deteriorating infrastructure and growing competition from cars and planes.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp8wqj9i00023b6ijqelv2j9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Rail Passenger Service Act, which removed the requirement that private rail companies provide passenger service. Since 1971, some routes have been abandoned, primarily in midwestern states like Indiana and Ohio, according to route maps provided by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp8wuebg00073b6imidsiyvs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Amtrak also has little control over scheduling delays and on-track maintenance, since more than 70% of the tracks it runs on are owned \u2013 and shared \u2013\u00a0with private freight companies.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpcviexz000q2a68l2glvhaw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Amtrak\u2019s affordability poses an issue, as well, according to Freemark. \u201cThey charge prices that are much higher than you see in other countries with much better service,\u201d he said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp8wup3j00093b6i21vtuxx1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      However, some improvements are on the way. In early November, the Biden administration announced plans to improve Amtrak\u2019s Northeast Corridor, the system\u2019s most heavily used route.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clp7etp5j000k3b6ix4qtzosi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Federal funds will go toward the safety of the trains, expanding capacity for more riders and replacing aging infrastructure \u2013 including a Baltimore rail tunnel that opened while Ulysses S.
