{"id":13581,"date":"2023-12-02T18:25:47","date_gmt":"2023-12-02T18:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/target-date-funds-what-are-they-and-are-they-right-for-you\/"},"modified":"2023-12-02T18:25:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-02T18:25:47","slug":"target-date-funds-what-are-they-and-are-they-right-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=13581","title":{"rendered":"Target date funds: What are they and are they right for you?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmrpc5q007q45p0aous94z2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      If you are in a 401(k) plan at work, you very likely have the option to invest in a so-called target date fund, which also may be called a retirement date fund or a lifecycle fund.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhx00013b6g4eatoad4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      At the end of 2020, the vast majority of plans (86%) offered target date funds, and 59% of 401(k) participants had money invested in one.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhy00023b6gcb7yrmad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      That\u2019s according to an analysis by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, which reviewed anonymized data on 11.5 million 401(k) participant accounts from employers of all sizes.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhy00043b6gjqv3z88j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      So what is a target date fund exactly? It\u2019s a blend of\u00a0stocks and bonds \u2014 an all-in-one portfolio \u2014 designed to offer an appropriate allocation for the average investor relative to their anticipated retirement date. In other words, you\u2019d pick a fund that aims for a retirement year closest to the year you\u2019ll turn 65. For example, if you\u2019re 25, you might invest in a 2065 target date fund. If you\u2019re 50, you would pick a 2040 fund. <strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhy00033b6gsn5qhgjp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The high percentage of 401(k) participants with money in a target date fund is partly because it is often the default investment for employees who are automatically enrolled in a plan or whose plan changes hands after a merger.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhy00063b6gd0czwht1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Typically a target date fund is a \u201cfund of funds\u201d \u2013 meaning its portfolio is made up of both stock funds and bond funds selected by the manager.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhy00073b6guhl63nzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Each target date fund has a future \u201cglide path\u201d for allocation, which is meant to grow more conservative over time. For instance, a fund aimed at a retirement date 40 years from now will be invested mostly in stocks (e.g., 90% stocks, 10% fixed income), whereas when the target date is just a few years away, the fund may allocate less than 50% to stocks \u2013 and by the actual retirement year, the stock allocation may be much less, said certified financial planner Madison Sharick of Madi Manages Money.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpn17xev00123b6gu71q1ocf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And those underlying funds may well be index funds, which track specific markets or sectors, or the broader stock or bond market. As an example, Vanguard notes that its target date funds invest in Vanguard\u2019s broadest index funds, essentially giving you exposure \u201cto thousands of U.S. and international stocks and bonds.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhy00083b6g1n776ooe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Besides adjusting the fund\u2019s allocation as your retirement approaches, the fund manager will rebalance the portfolio periodically to make sure the chosen asset allocation for a given year doesn\u2019t get too out of whack due to market performance, said certified financial planner Bryan Minogue of Kardinal Financial.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhy00093b6guu9tomyv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      For example, Minogue noted, the fund may adjust quarterly to ensure it sticks to its assigned allocation (e.g., 70% stocks, 30% bonds). Or it may adjust whenever the stock or bond portion of the portfolio moves up or down by, say, 5% or more.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhy000b3b6ggbor2lfy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Before making a decision as to whether a target date fund is a good investment for your needs, check the fund\u2019s fact sheet or prospectus to find out what the fund\u2019s stated mission is, how it is currently allocated, and what its future glide path will be.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxhz000c3b6g8qnqnuhy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And, importantly, check the fund\u2019s expense ratio since that will determine what you will pay in annual fees. Ideally you want an expense ratio below 0.3%, Sharick said. For example, say a fund has a 0.2% expense ratio. That means you will pay $20 in annual fees for every $10,000 you have invested (0.2% x $10,000).\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpn7dvk000013b6gj8ydbzso@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Beyond gathering that information, consider that the fund is designed to help \u201caverage\u201d investors by assuming a certain risk tolerance and set of investment goals for them, which may or may not match your own, said Tampa, Florida-based certified financial planner Stacy Miller.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxi3000e3b6gq03qjhb8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      It is especially critical in your 50s to revisit your fund\u2019s glide path to (and possibly after) the fund\u2019s retirement date. If you\u2019re healthy and expect to live 20 or more years in retirement, make sure the target date fund\u2019s planned stock allocation can generate enough growth in your portfolio for your needs and preferences.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxi4000f3b6gop4lxfl7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cAs pre-retirees approach that retirement \u2018target date\u2019, some of these funds start shifting more to fixed income and away from equity positions altogether. Depending on the investor\u2019s risk profile, this could be detrimental to their long-term retirement goals,\u201d Miller said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxi4000g3b6gba5b3aym@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      When Minogue is helping a client figure out how best to invest their 401(k), he said he will always recommend the target date fund option if he can\u2019t see how else the client can build out an adequately diversified stock and bond portfolio at a low cost.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxi4000h3b6gkusgqjy8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And in plans where target date funds are the only option, he said, \u201cit\u2019s a great default option.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxi4000j3b6g1i6sb38k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Beyond reading the fine print on what a target fund aims to do and how it aims to do it, be honest with yourself about what type of investor you are.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxi4000k3b6gksunyu2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      If you\u2019re willing to take more risk than the average person and you\u2019re willing to actively manage and rebalance your portfolio on your own, you may feel your money is too constrained in a target date fund.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxi4000l3b6giqoxnjsi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But target date funds can be a good option if you simply don\u2019t feel confident enough \u2013 or frankly, interested enough \u2013 to actively manage your retirement savings.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clpmxaxi4000m3b6gh52h0ojt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cIf you\u2019re an overanalyzer or overthinker, or you don\u2019t want to worry about it, target date funds are for you,\u201d Sharick said.\n  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/02\/success\/target-date-funds-401k-explained\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are in a 401(k) plan at work, you very likely have the option to invest in a so-called target date&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":13582,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-13581","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-business"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Target date funds: What are they and are they right for you?
