{"id":13661,"date":"2024-12-21T00:11:57","date_gmt":"2024-12-21T00:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=13661"},"modified":"2024-12-21T00:11:58","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T00:11:58","slug":"us-house-votes-through-last-gasp-bill-to-keep-government-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=13661","title":{"rendered":"US House votes through last-gasp bill to keep government open"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=766ccaac-bdd2-43aa-9107-221190ee70be&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The US House passed a stop-gap funding measure with just hours to spare on Friday, paving the way for Congress to avert a government shutdown after days of fighting on Capitol Hill. <\/p>\n<p>The bill that passed the House did not include any change to the debt ceiling, defying Donald Trump\u2019s call for the mechanism to be scrapped or increased.<\/p>\n<p>But the measure gained bipartisan support in the chamber, with Democrats joining Republicans to pass the bill 366-34 just after 6pm in Washington \u2014 six hours before the deadline. <\/p>\n<p>The Democratic controlled Senate must now vote on the law before it heads to the desk of President Joe Biden, who will support the legislation, according to the White House press secretary. <\/p>\n<p>Enacting the bill will end a week of volatility in Washington as Trump and his ally Elon Musk flexed their influence over hardline Republicans, pushing them to reject what they said were \u201cgiveaways\u201d to Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Before the bill passed on Friday, Musk expressed his continued disdain for the bill: \u201cSo is this a Republican bill or a Democrat bill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The measure passed was House Speaker Mike Johnson\u2019s third attempt to get a deal through the chamber after Trump torpedoed the first bipartisan agreement earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>The new bill was almost identical to Johnson\u2019s second one, but stripped out any move to raise or suspend the debt ceiling, despite Trump\u2019s demands. It extends government funding at current levels, and provides aid for natural disaster relief and farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said after the bill passed that he had been in \u201cconstant contact\u201d with Trump and spoken to Musk shortly before the vote and received their blessing.<\/p>\n<p>Trump \u201cknew exactly what we were doing and why and, and this is a good outcome for the country. I think he certainly is happy about this outcome as well\u201d, he told reporters on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said he asked Musk \u201c\u2018hey, you want to be Speaker of the House?\u2019\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009He said, \u2018this may be the hardest job in the world\u2019. It is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk and I talked to within about an hour ago and we talked about the extraordinary challenges of this job. And I said, Hey, you want to be Speaker the house? I don\u2019t know. He said, this may be the hardest job in the world<\/p>\n<p>The passage in the House marked a victory for Johnson, who had vowed earlier in the day that the US would \u201cnot have a government shut down\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>A shutdown would temporarily close parts of the government and suspend pay for federal employees. Previous government shutdowns have forced hundreds of thousands of federal workers to be furloughed. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats also claimed victory, with House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries saying his party \u201cstopped extreme Maga Republicans from shutting down the government\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cHouse Democrats have successfully stopped the billionaire boys club, which wanted a $4tn blank cheque by suspending the debt ceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s looming presence over the debate has been the biggest complicating factor in frantic negotiations to find a last-minute deal. <\/p>\n<p>But as soon as the vote began, Musk changed his tune, saying that Johnson \u201cdid a good job here, given the circumstances. It went from a bill that weighed pounds to a bill that weighed ounces. Ball should now be in the Dem court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, angry that the earlier bipartisan deal was ditched, have blamed Musk for inserting himself in the process this week, triggering more turmoil in Congress just ahead of the US holiday season. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the behest of the world\u2019s richest man who no one voted for, the US Congress has been thrown into pandemonium,\u201d said Democrat Rosa DeLauro about Musk on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Some top Republicans also appeared to criticise the interventions by Trump and Musk. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care to count how many times I\u2019ve reminded\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009our House counterparts how harmful it is to shut the government down\u00a0and\u00a0how foolish it\u00a0is\u00a0to bet\u00a0your own\u00a0side\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0take the blame for it,\u201d Mitch McConnell, the outgoing Senate Republican leader, said on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat said, if I took it personally every time my
