{"id":14041,"date":"2025-02-16T02:40:39","date_gmt":"2025-02-16T02:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14041"},"modified":"2025-02-16T02:40:40","modified_gmt":"2025-02-16T02:40:40","slug":"protesters-target-tesla-showrooms-over-elon-musks-cost-cutting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14041","title":{"rendered":"Protesters target Tesla showrooms over Elon Musk\u2019s cost-cutting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=69129b95-d8f9-4dc9-87fb-5d5a7892d320\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Protesters gathered outside Tesla showrooms across the US on Saturday to demonstrate against the drastic cuts Elon Musk, the billionaire adviser to President Donald Trump, is imposing on the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers cited 37 protests across the country as part of an effort co-ordinated through the social media hashtags #TeslaTakedown and #TeslaTakover.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s car company is emerging as a target for political outrage in the US and Europe in response to the billionaire\u2019s outsized influence in the White House. <\/p>\n<p>Through his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), Musk has orchestrated the dismissal of tens of thousands of civil servants, and gained access to sensitive US Treasury payments. He has also voiced his support for the German far-right and called for the centre-left government of Sir Keir Starmer in the UK to be thrown out. <\/p>\n<p>What began with Tesla owners slapping bumper stickers on their cars saying \u201cI bought this before Elon went crazy\u201d has grown to activists projecting an image of Musk making a gesture many have likened to a Nazi salute on to Tesla\u2019s factory in Berlin.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2289\" height=\"1526\"><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Protesters rally at a Tesla showroom in New York on Saturday. <\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Bloomberg<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The UK campaign group Led by Donkeys joined with Germany\u2019s Centre for Political Beauty in January to project the image, part of a longer montage of Musk\u2019s recent political statements. The group said it was produced in response to the Tesla chief executive\u2019s endorsement of German far-right political party, the AfD.<\/p>\n<p>Local news outlets have reported on arson and attempted arson at Tesla showrooms in Oregon and Colorado. Earlier this month a Tesla showroom in The Hague was defaced with graffiti that included swastikas and anti-fascist slogans.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch police confirmed to the FT that they were in contact with Tesla and the investigation was continuing, but no arrests had yet been made. <\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u2019s stock, which climbed after the presidential election, fell 6 per cent on Tuesday to $328.50. It rebounded to close the week at $355.84 but is still down 12 per cent since the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worry of the Street is that Musk dedicating so much time \u2014 even more than we expected \u2014 to Doge takes away from his time at Tesla,\u201d said Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, Musk\u2019s Doge-related actions and more powerful alliance with Trump clearly could alienate some consumers to move away from the Tesla brand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 50 to 100 protesters turned out in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, carrying signs saying, \u201cDethrone Musk\u201d and \u201cIf Tesla survives, your country dies\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Edward Niedermeyer, author of <em>Ludicrous: The Unvarnished Story of Tesla Motors<\/em>, was one of them. Since Musk\u2019s power is not derived from election to public office, he said, boycotting and divesting from Tesla is the only tool available to curb his agenda.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that Tesla was overvalued and that its core business of making and selling cars was deteriorating. Significant losses could force investors to sell, triggering a drop in the share price and forcing Musk to sell a portion of his shares to meet a margin call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Tesla sale that you prevent, every dollar not spent servicing a Tesla, not charging at the Supercharger \u2014 these further degrade the business,\u201d Niedermeyer said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not easy, it\u2019s not guaranteed, but we do have the opportunity to wipe out a huge amount of Elon Musk\u2019s wealth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Chicago, protesters carried a banner saying \u201cStop buying Nazi cars\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>City resident Lisa Pereira said she came to the demonstration because \u201cyou have to do something\u201d. She said she was disturbed by the administration\u2019s attempts to crush diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, its aggressive immigration enforcement, and the power wielded by Musk. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is a little off the rails,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I decided I had to show up. I had to be in cahoots with my soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris White said he attended on Saturday because he fears \u201cwe\u2019re living through a fascist coup\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy kids are trans,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m getting told they don\u2019t exist.
