{"id":14047,"date":"2025-02-17T02:50:04","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T02:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14047"},"modified":"2025-02-17T02:50:04","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T02:50:04","slug":"japans-economy-expands-for-third-straight-quarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14047","title":{"rendered":"Japan\u2019s economy expands for third straight quarter"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=84afb81b-3d80-44a9-aa68-366187847ecb\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Japan\u2019s GDP expanded at an annualised rate of 2.8 per cent in the October to December 2024 period, significantly exceeding consensus analyst estimates and marking the third straight quarter of expansion.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary report, released by the Cabinet Office on Monday, showed a quarter-on-quarter, inflation-adjusted real GDP expansion of 0.7 per cent, versus the median forecast of a 0.3 per cent rise, according to analysts polled by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s overall GDP figure was further boosted by corporate spending, which rose 0.5 per cent quarter on quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The yen strengthened 0.3 per cent to \u00a5151.89 per US dollar.<\/p>\n<p>Though subject to revision, the GDP growth figure signalled that Japan\u2019s economy remained in fair shape despite the ructions that accompanied the Bank of Japan\u2019s move last year to \u201cnormalise\u201d monetary policy and begin a cycle of interest rate rises.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the BoJ increased rates to about 0.5 per cent \u2014 the highest level in 17 years \u2014 and signalled more rises to come as inflation remains entrenched.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most economists now expect the BoJ to raise rates at least once in 2025, with many pinpointing the central bank\u2019s meeting in July as the most likely date.<\/p>\n<p>Several economists who had forecast GDP growth would decelerate to an annualised rate of about 1 per cent in the fourth quarter, had expected the overall numbers to be dragged down by private consumption as record-high rice prices and warmer weather hit spending on food and winter clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Private consumption, which represents about half of Japan\u2019s economic output, rose 0.1 per cent in the quarter, bucking most analysts\u2019 expectations of a contraction.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the government is due to release January\u2019s reading of national consumer price growth.
