{"id":14136,"date":"2025-03-04T03:17:41","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T03:17:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14136"},"modified":"2025-03-04T03:17:41","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T03:17:41","slug":"us-suspends-military-aid-to-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14136","title":{"rendered":"US suspends military aid to Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=97b178ea-e2b1-46c8-bc0a-ed8deda4abfd&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The US is suspending military aid to Ukraine as Donald Trump seeks to increase pressure on Volodymyr Zelenskyy to make concessions just days after the two leaders publicly sparred in the White House over peace talks with Russia. <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s decision halts what has been a consistent supply of US military assistance including weapons to Kyiv since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago. <\/p>\n<p>It comes amid growing tension between Trump and Zelenskyy, as the US president tries to push Ukraine to rapidly settle the conflict with Russia. <\/p>\n<p>A White House official on Monday said: \u201cThe president has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move came after Trump renewed his verbal attack on Ukraine\u2019s president on social media and in remarks to reporters at the White House on Monday, following the dramatic confrontation in the Oval Office on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think he should be more appreciative, because this country has stuck with them through thick and thin,\u201d Trump said of Zelenskyy. He also suggested Ukraine\u2019s leader might be out of office if he fails to reach an accord with Moscow. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should not be that hard a deal to make,\u201d the president added. \u201cIt could be made very fast. Now maybe somebody doesn\u2019t want to make a deal, and if somebody doesn\u2019t want to make a deal, I think that person won\u2019t be around very long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After reports of the freeze emerged on Monday, US secretary of state Marco Rubio appeared to suggest it was tied to a wider diplomatic effort. \u201cWe want to get the Russians to a negotiating table. We want to explore whether peace is possible,\u201d Rubio said in a statement, without directly mentioning the suspension.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s decision will add urgency to efforts in many European capitals to bolster their own military support for Kyiv, because an extended pause in US assistance could give Russian forces a big advantage on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute for the Study of War in Washington on Monday night warned that the decision to cut off US aid would \u201cdirectly undermine President Trump\u2019s stated goal of achieving a sustainable peace in Ukraine\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia would leverage the cessation of US aid to Ukraine to seize more territory in Ukraine and attempt to exhaust European support \u2014 the approach Putin has outlined in his theory of victory,\u201d ISW added. <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s move comes after a weekend of intense diplomatic activity in Europe, including a summit hosted by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and a month-long ceasefire plan proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron, to try to forge a settlement on better terms for Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>It also comes on the eve of Trump\u2019s first address to a joint session of Congress of his second term on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Fox News presenter Sean Hannity on Tuesday, US vice-president JD Vance said his \u201cmessage to Ukrainians\u201d was: \u201cDonald Trump is the only game in town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vance, who joined Trump in berating Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on Friday, also called on the Ukrainian president to \u201cengage seriously on the details\u201d of a deal, adding: \u201cThe very best security is to give Americans economic upside in the future of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been trying to agree a deal with Kyiv for access to Ukrainian critical minerals. But the agreement, which US officials see as pivotal to Washington\u2019s backing for Ukraine, was postponed after the clash in the White House. <\/p>\n<p>However, Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican congressman from Pennsylvania, on Monday said he spoke to Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy\u2019s chief of staff, and believed the signing of the deal was imminent.<\/p>\n<p>Fitzpatrick wrote on X ahead of the announcement: \u201cWe are 100% getting this train back on the tracks. This mineral deal will be signed in short order, which will lead to a strong long-term economic partnership between the United States and Ukraine, and which will ultimately and naturally lead to security assistance.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEurope will be required to step up and do its part, and there will be mandates for them to do just that,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats immediately attacked the suspension of military aid and called for it to be reversed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump\u2019s decision to unilaterally pause funding for Ukraine is reckless, indefensible, and a direct threat to our national security,\u201d said Brendan Boyle, a Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world is watching, and we cannot afford to let Trump\u2019s reckless actions
