President Donald Trump has declared that his administration is \u201cjust getting started\u201d in his first joint address to Congress of his second term, as he touted his domestic and international achievements and criticised Democrats.<\/p>\n

The speech, delivered to a palpably divided chamber in which several Democrats held signs of protest, caps a dramatic few months in which Trump has unleashed an aggressive agenda to reshape US trade and foreign policy.<\/p>\n

It comes on the day Trump imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico, the US\u2019s biggest trading partners, as well as additional 10 per cent levies on China, sending US stocks plummeting.<\/p>\n

During his address, Trump defended his tariffs, arguing that the measures were \u201cnot just about protecting American jobs, they\u2019re about protecting the soul of our country\u201d. However, he admitted that the levies would cause \u201cdisturbance\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump pledged to balance the federal budget, while also saying he would press ahead with planned tax cuts. He added that his administration would \u201creclaim power from this unaccountable bureaucracy\u201d amid an aggressive push to slash federal government spending.<\/p>\n

Trump boasted of the \u201cmost sweeping border and immigration crackdown in American history\u201d and vowed to rapidly round up and deport migrants with criminal records.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks on Ukraine and Russia will be among the most closely\u00a0watched of the night, coming on the heels of his move to cut off military aid to Kyiv and last week\u2019s big Oval Office altercation with Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
