{"id":14320,"date":"2025-04-02T05:25:40","date_gmt":"2025-04-02T05:25:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14320"},"modified":"2025-04-02T05:25:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T05:25:41","slug":"investors-on-edge-as-donald-trump-moves-to-apply-new-tariffs-immediately","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14320","title":{"rendered":"Investors on edge as Donald Trump moves to apply new tariffs \u2018immediately\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=7acd38e2-9571-4d6c-bae6-d72bde812313&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Donald Trump planned to hit imports to the US with new tariffs \u201cimmediately\u201d on Wednesday, the White House said, putting investors on edge and threatening to ignite a full-blown global trade war.<\/p>\n<p>Trump spent hours huddled with his closest aides on Tuesday, the eve of what he has dubbed \u201cliberation day\u201d, when he will announce his new \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs on foreign countries in a ceremony in the Rose Garden of the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Traders are already braced for the fallout and wary of making bold calls on what Trump will say, with measures of Wall Street volatility creeping higher in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investor community is universally anxious,\u201d said Robert Tipp, head of global bonds at asset manager PGIM, pointing to \u201cpeople reducing risk and backing away from credit, backing away from the dollar, backing away from stocks\u201d in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>After hours locked in discussions with aides on Tuesday, there was little sign that Trump would back down from his plan to ratchet up duties despite warnings of the impact on the US economy.<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday that the tariffs would be \u201ceffective immediately\u201d and dismissed the anxiety in markets that has sparked a sharp sell-off in the S&amp;P 500 index in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The US stock exchange was a \u201csnapshot in time\u201d, said Leavitt, echoing comments from other Trump officials that the White House would look past market turbulence stemming from the tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president wants to ensure that Americans make out well, particularly Main Street \u2014 that\u2019s the focus of these tariffs. Wall Street will be just fine,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s tariff threats and subsequent U-turns have whipsawed markets this year, pushing US equities lower and pressuring the dollar and riskier corporate bonds.<\/p>\n<p>JPMorgan\u2019s fixed-income team sent a note to clients on Tuesday afternoon with the title: \u201cWe don\u2019t know what tomorrow brings.\u201d They noted \u201cmarkets remained on edge\u201d ahead of the president\u2019s announcements.<\/p>\n<p>While some investors have reaped rewards by riding the volatility, many fund managers have shied away from making directional bets given the president\u2019s unpredictability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are doing aggressively nothing,\u201d said Ed Al-Hussainy, senior rates analyst at Columbia Threadneedle Investments.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is broadly expected to unveil reciprocal tariffs on America\u2019s trading partners, but investors remain uncertain about their scope and scale. Since retaking office, he has already announced steep tariffs on Canada and Mexico before watering down the plans.<\/p>\n<p>To hit US trading partners with tariffs immediately, Trump would need to resort to rarely used emergency economic measures. But whether he offers any relief to allies remains unclear \u2014 as does the ultimate purpose of the tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>While Trump\u2019s commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, has pressed foreign officials for \u201cdeals\u201d in meetings held over recent weeks, other Trump aides see the tariffs as a way to raise revenue for planned tax cuts.<\/p>\n<p>April 2 does feel like a \u201c\u2018clearing event\u2019 one way or another\u201d, said Christopher Krueger, managing director at TD Cowen Washington Research Group. \u201cIt should answer the biggest question from markets, which is if the tariffs are a means to an end, or the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gauges of expected market volatility have risen in recent days, with the Vix index of projected equity market turbulence up 4.6 points over the past week to 22, above the long-term average of 20.<\/p>\n<p>A CME index of tumult in the world\u2019s five most traded currencies and Bank of America\u2019s closely watched gauge of implied volatility in the US Treasury market are both at the highest levels since mid-March.<\/p>\n<p>But those measures remain well below peaks touched this year. Mandy Xu, head of derivatives market intelligence at Cboe Global Markets,\u00a0said there was little sign of a \u201c\u2018liberation day\u2019 premium\u201d in equity market volatility pricing. Investors expect the S&amp;P 500 to trade within a 1.6 per cent band on Wednesday, she added.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the derivatives market, where futures and options are traded, was showing \u201clittle extra risk\u201d priced around April 2, said Rocky Fishman,\u00a0a derivatives analyst at research group Asym 500.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost investors realise that whatever they think, [Trump\u2019s announcements on Wednesday] could leave them with egg on their face,\u201d said Mike Zigmont, co-head of trading at Visdom Investment Group.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a
