Han Duck-soo, a Yoon appointee and long-serving technocrat, will serve as acting president until then.<\/p>\n<p>The hardline former prosecutor\u2019s move to impose martial law in December triggered South Korea\u2019s most severe political crisis since its transition to democracy in the late 1980s, leading to his suspension and subsequent arrest on a criminal charge of insurrection.<\/p>\n<p>Yoon told the Constitutional Court in February that his overnight martial law decree and decision to deploy troops to storm the country\u2019s parliament had been necessary to \u201calert the public\u201d to the \u201cwickedness\u201d of the leftwing opposition.<\/p>\n<p>But, announcing the court\u2019s ruling on Friday morning, acting chief justice Moon Hyung-bae said Yoon had \u201cviolated the basic principles of a democratic state\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Moon described how in an attempt to prevent lawmakers from voting to reject his martial law decree, Yoon had dispatched soldiers to the National Assembly with orders to \u201cbreak down the door and drag the lawmakers out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said Yoon\u2019s defence minister also instructed counter-intelligence services to monitor the location of the National Assembly speaker and the leaders of the main political parties \u2014 including his own \u2014 on the night of the martial law decree as a precursor to arresting them.<\/p>\n<p>Military officials also illegally inspected the electoral commission\u2019s computer systems and monitored the locations of senior members of the judiciary, including a former Supreme Court chief justice, said Moon. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Yoon] mobilised military and police forces to dismantle the authority of constitutional institutions and infringed upon the fundamental rights of the people,\u201d said Moon. \u201cIn doing so, he abandoned his duty to uphold the constitution and gravely betrayed the trust of the Korean people.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2288\" height=\"1526\"><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>Anti-Yoon protesters react after the Constitutional Court\u2019s verdict in Seoul on Friday<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Pedro Pardo\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a statement released several hours after the court\u2019s verdict, Yoon said he was \u201cdeeply grateful to all of you who have supported and cheered for me, despite my many shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so sorry and regretful that I could not live up to your expectations,\u201d he added. \u201cI will always pray for the Republic of Korea and its citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former president still faces separate criminal charges of insurrection. He denies any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark verdict, which marks the second time a South Korean president has been impeached and removed from office in under a decade, comes as Asia\u2019s fourth-largest economy wrestles with sluggish growth and deepening political polarisation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kwon Young-se, the interim leader of Yoon\u2019s conservative People Power party, said the PPP would accept the ruling and that he \u201csincerely apologises\u201d to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Yoon\u2019s lawyer, Yun Gap-geun, told reporters outside the court that he felt \u201cdeep regret\u201d over the ruling, which he said \u201cappears to be nothing more than a political decision\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Given heightened tensions in recent months and violence at some pro-Yoon protests, there was a heavy police presence on the streets of Seoul on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>Near the court, some Yoon supporters vandalised police vehicles, while others chanted death threats against Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the leftwing opposition Democratic party and the frontrunner in the race to succeed Yoon.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Lee described the verdict as \u201ca new beginning for Korea\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Jung Chung-rae, head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly\u2019s impeachment committee, described the ruling as a \u201cvictory for the constitution, democracy and the people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts noted that South Korea was bracing for the economic impact of US President Donald Trump\u2019s protectionist trade policies.
