{"id":14385,"date":"2025-04-16T06:06:36","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T06:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14385"},"modified":"2025-04-16T06:06:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T06:06:37","slug":"nvidia-to-take-5-5bn-hit-as-us-clamps-down-on-exports-of-ai-chips-to-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14385","title":{"rendered":"Nvidia to take $5.5bn hit as US clamps down on exports of AI chips to China"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=66e6abfa-2b79-407c-bda6-d04d19b3b814&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Nvidia has said it expects to take a $5.5bn blow after the US clamped down on its ability to export artificial intelligence chips to China, sending the Silicon Valley behemoth\u2019s shares sliding in after-hours trading. <\/p>\n<p>The group said in a regulatory filing late on Tuesday that the H20 chip, which is tailored for the Chinese market to comply with export controls that already prevent the sale of its most powerful chips in China, would now require a special licence to sell to customers there. <\/p>\n<p>Nvidia said the US had said the move was necessary to address the risk of H20 chips being used in \u201ca supercomputer in China\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The chipmaker said it would take a $5.5bn charge in the quarter to April 27 related to H20 chips. Its shares fell 6 per cent in after-hours trading on Tuesday, while futures tracking the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 index declined more than 1 per cent. Stocks in Hong Kong fell on Wednesday, led by major AI chip buyers Alibaba, down 5 per cent, and Baidu and Tencent, both falling 3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Washington\u2019s crackdown on H20 chips is the latest example of how the US is using tariffs and other trade barriers to increase pressure on Beijing. President Donald Trump has already increased tariffs on Chinese imports to 145 per cent, although some consumer electronics have received a temporary reprieve. <\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary\u00a0Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday urged China to cut a new trade deal with the US, saying, \u201cthe ball is in China\u2019s court\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The US commerce department confirmed later on Tuesday it was issuing new export licensing requirements for the H20, as well as AMD\u2019s MI308 and equivalent chips.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commerce department is committed to acting on the president\u2019s directive to safeguard our national and economic security,\u201d a spokesperson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AMD is Nvidia\u2019s closest direct competitor in the AI data centre chip market. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The US\u2019s move also underscores how Nvidia, the chip designer at the heart of the AI boom, which saw unchecked growth over the course of last year and briefly became the world\u2019s most valuable company, is exposed to geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the Trump administration launched a national security probe that could lead to new tariffs on semiconductors, as it holds off from immediately applying steeper levies on chips.<\/p>\n<p>The restrictions come despite Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang joining other tech executives in seeking to court Trump. Huang recently dined with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort and met the president at the White House in January. <\/p>\n<p>Nvidia also said on Monday it would spend up to half a trillion dollars on US AI infrastructure over the next four years through partnerships with companies including Taiwan\u2019s TSMC and Foxconn. The Financial Times had first reported on its investment plans.<\/p>\n<p>The company introduced its China-focused H20 processors last year after the Biden administration imposed export controls on its chips.<\/p>\n<p>They are less powerful than its top range of graphics processing units, or GPUs, coveted by Microsoft, OpenAI, Google and Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its reduced performance, the H20 has still seen solid demand in China. But Beijing has taken steps to encourage local tech companies to use homegrown chips from companies such as Huawei, and could freeze out Nvidia\u2019s products with new energy-efficiency rules.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s shares are down about 16 per cent since the start of the year, as of Tuesday\u2019s close, as anxieties mount about the growing arms race between the US and China around the infrastructure that powers AI. They have also been swept into a broader market rout sparked by the escalating trade war.<\/p>\n<p>Bernstein analysts on Tuesday said the H20 accounted for about $12bn of Nvidia\u2019s $17bn in China revenue, while there was a lack of clarity at this stage on whether licences might be granted, or whether it amounted to a full \u201cwipeout\u201d of the product line.<\/p>\n<p>The rollout of Nvidia\u2019s newest AI chips has hit stumbling blocks as successive US administrations have sought ways to control the export of the technology.<\/p>\n<p>The US is worried China will be more successful building supercomputers, which can be used for everything from the development of hypersonic weapons to modelling for nuclear weapons, to help the People\u2019s Liberation Army.<\/p>\n<p>China has repeatedly accused the US of using national security tools, such as export controls, to throttle its economic development.\u00a0The Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>An \u201cAI diffusion\u201d rule, introduced in the last days of the Biden administration, is set to come into force in May unless the Trump administration decides to unwind it. It would impose far stricter controls on where the most powerful US chips can be exported to, using a \u201ctiered\u201d licensing system that caps exports for all but a small number of countries.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Republican senators wrote to commerce secretary Howard Lutnick asking the administration to scrap the rule, which has faced pushback across the industry, including from
