{"id":14413,"date":"2025-04-24T06:13:40","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T06:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14413"},"modified":"2025-04-24T06:13:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T06:13:41","slug":"bnp-paribas-traders-ride-wall-street-boom-to-record-quarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14413","title":{"rendered":"BNP Paribas traders ride Wall Street boom to record quarter"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=86b8c228-b060-41de-bb63-3ed3353971e9\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>BNP Paribas\u2019 traders helped its investment bank to a record quarter, extending the gains from Trump-induced market volatility from Wall Street to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The French bank\u2019s investment banking division reported revenues of \u20ac5.3bn for the first three months of the year, up 12.5 per cent from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>BNP\u2019s equity and prime services traders drove the increase, with a 42 per cent rise in revenues for the division to \u20ac1.2bn.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump\u2019s erratic trade and policy announcements have led to wild swings in stock markets, giving traders a chance to exploit market moves.<\/p>\n<p>BNP\u2019s results come after Wall Street\u2019s biggest banks brought in almost $37bn in trading revenues in the first three months of the year off the back of the market uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>The record quarter from the French bank\u2019s investment banking division helped propel revenues across the group to almost \u20ac13bn, up 3.8 per cent from the previous year and slightly ahead of analysts\u2019 estimates.<\/p>\n<p>But net income fell by 4.9 per cent to \u20ac2.95bn, just shy of expectations, after exceptional items boosted earnings in 2024, including an accounting decision relating to the BNP\u2019s business in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the boost to equity trading, BNP saw more modest growth in its global banking unit \u2014 which houses its mergers and acquisitions, equity capital markets and debt capital markets businesses \u2014 of 4.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Volatility has restrained dealmaking across Wall Street and Europe, as stock market swings have dashed hopes that Trump\u2019s election would help spur a revival of the market for initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>BNP\u2019s retail bank also posted sluggish growth of just over 1.2 per cent, with revenues from its leasing division including car leasing business Arval falling 12 per cent due to lower used-car prices.<\/p>\n<p>The lender announced a shake-up of the retail division earlier this year, an overhaul that will involve it investing in new technology and cutting back the number of branches in France.<\/p>\n<p>BNP confirmed its guidance for the 2024-26 period, an annual growth rate of 5 per cent. It also reported a common equity tier one ratio of 12.4 per cent, a measure of financial resilience, in line with analysts\u2019 estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the bank\u2019s shares took a hit after an opinion from the European Central Bank left it exposed to a larger than expected hit to capital from its \u20ac5bn acquisition of Axa\u2019s asset management arm.<\/p>\n<p>BNP said that any decision not to apply a rule known as the Danish Compromise would expose it to a 0.35 percentage point hit to CET1, compared with 0.25 points under the previous scenario.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/86b8c228-b060-41de-bb63-3ed3353971e9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
