{"id":14634,"date":"2025-06-05T07:28:58","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T07:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14634"},"modified":"2025-06-05T07:28:58","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T07:28:58","slug":"nintendo-sells-out-switch-2-console-at-global-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14634","title":{"rendered":"Nintendo sells out Switch 2 console at global launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=f63cfbcc-9d0e-440e-ad9a-02d01d328f93\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Long queues and midnight store openings have marked the global launch of Nintendo\u2019s Switch 2, a long-awaited console upgrade that analysts see as a catalyst for the next wave of video game industry growth.<\/p>\n<p>More than 150mn units of the hybrid handheld and home gaming system and almost 1.4bn games have been sold since the 2017 debut of the original Switch.<\/p>\n<p>More powerful than the first version, with a bigger screen, better graphics and upgraded controllers, the Switch 2 carries the hopes that its launch will energise gamers and developers to help it emulate the success of its predecessor. <\/p>\n<p>Online pre-orders have been strong, while shoppers in Japan have been told to manage their expectations of grabbing one in-store on Thursday. The pattern has been replicated worldwide, with shops holding midnight launches but stating that they expect the device to sell out quickly, driven by hype and an impressive roster of games ready for players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the UK, pre-orders closed down in a minute, in France the same thing and in the US there were multiple crashes online\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009people had to queue up overnight just so they could pre-order [in stores],\u201d said Atul Goyal, an analyst at Jefferies. He predicts Nintendo will sell 15mn units, in line with the company\u2019s guidance for the fiscal year. Other analysts have predicted 20mn units or more.<\/p>\n<p>Nintendo\u2019s share price has responded to the buoyant demand, rising 32 per cent this year and shrugging off the potential impact of tariffs from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>The clearest signal that demand was outstripping supply came in April when Nintendo chief Shuntaro Furukawa had to apologise to fans after the company received 2.2mn pre-orders online \u2014 even after imposing conditions for participation, such as logging more than 50 hours of gameplay on the Switch.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2288\" height=\"1525\"><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption o3-editorial-typography-caption\"><span>Customers in a London electronics store play the new Mario Kart video game released to coincide with the launch of the Switch 2<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Bloomberg<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The pre-order figure \u201cgreatly exceeded our prior expectations and far surpasses the number of Nintendo Switch 2 units we can deliver from the My Nintendo Store on June 5\u201d, said Furukawa on social media. <\/p>\n<p>High demand globally comes despite complaints about a price tag of around $450 \u2014 50 per cent higher than the original Switch when launched \u2014 and games hitting $80 for premium titles such as <em>Mario Kart World.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nintendo had been shifting production from China to countries in south-east Asia in recent years in anticipation of trade tensions, only to see Cambodia and Vietnam production centres threatened by President Donald Trump\u2019s high \u201creciprocal tariffs\u201d in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, analysts believe tariffs will eventually settle at levels that Nintendo can manage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll consoles are ultimately going to be affected by tariffs, not just Switch, and in that context, the longer Nintendo can maintain a sub-$500 price point, the better,\u201d said Gareth Sutcliffe at Enders Analysis. \u201cThey will clearly be holding on as long as possible, squeezing margins if necessary, to maintain run rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Analysts also view the Switch 2 as indicating where games hardware might be headed, with its release coinciding with the midpoint of the life cycles of the latest Xbox and PlayStation consoles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear Microsoft and Sony\u2019s console model needs a radical overhaul to compete,\u201d said Sutcliffe. \u201cSwitch 2 is the only hardware growth story in gaming.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f63cfbcc-9d0e-440e-ad9a-02d01d328f93\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
