{"id":14687,"date":"2025-06-19T07:47:25","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T07:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14687"},"modified":"2025-06-19T07:47:25","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T07:47:25","slug":"air-india-chair-says-crashed-plane-and-engines-had-clean-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14687","title":{"rendered":"Air India chair says crashed plane and engines had \u2018clean history\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=d548ef96-12bb-492c-8b31-639af9741475\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The Boeing Dreamliner jet in last week\u2019s deadly Air India crash had\u00a0a \u201cclean history\u201d and two recently serviced engines, the airline\u2019s chair has said, as an investigation into the country\u2019s worst air disaster in almost three decades gets under way.<\/p>\n<p>N Chandrasekaran, who is also chair of the carrier\u2019s owner, Tata Group, pushed back on \u201cspeculations\u201d about what caused the London-bound flight to crash a minute after take-off in Ahmedabad last Thursday, adding that preliminary results from an investigation could take a month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are speculations about human error, speculations about airlines, speculations about engines, maintenance, all kinds,\u201d Chandrasekaran told India\u2019s Economic Times in an interview published late on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the fact that I know so far is this particular aircraft, this specific tail, AI-171 has a clean history,\u201d he said, referring to Air India Flight 171. All but one of 242 people on board the flight were killed, along with dozens more in a medical college where the plane crashed.<\/p>\n<p>The Dreamliner\u2019s right engine was a \u201cnew engine\u201d installed in March, while its left engine \u2014 whose installation date Chandrasekaran did not give \u2014 was serviced in 2023 and due for its next maintenance check in December, said the Air India chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth engine histories are clean,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sumeet Sabharwal, the captain, had more than 11,500 hours of flying experience, while first officer Clive Kunder, had more than 3,400 hours, said Chandrasekaran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I hear from colleagues is that they were excellent pilots and great professionals,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we can\u2019t jump to any conclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is leading the probe, along with its UK and US counterparts.\u00a0Fifty-three British citizens were on board the flight, including sole surviving passenger Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing and GE Aerospace, which made the plane\u2019s engines, are co-operating. Chandrasekaran said he had been in touch with both companies \u201cat the highest levels\u201d. This is the first fatal accident involving a Dreamliner.<\/p>\n<p>The AAIB is analysing the plane\u2019s black boxes and has yet to comment on its findings. Aviation analysts who have studied video footage of the flight said the jet\u2019s ram air turbine, an emergency device for events such as electrical or engine failure, appeared to be deployed after take-off.<\/p>\n<p>Air India on Wednesday said it would cut long-haul services by 15 per cent, citing enhanced safety checks ordered by authorities and restrictions on airspace because of the conflict in the Middle East. It said most of these inspections had been concluded, giving it \u201creassurance in the safety measures and procedures that we follow\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The accident has presented Tata, which bought the airline out of state ownership in 2022, with one of the worst crises in its recent history. Singapore Airlines acquired a 25 per cent stake in Air India after its joint venture with Tata, Vistara, was absorbed in a merger last year.<\/p>\n<p>Chandrasekaran said Air India\u2019s 33 Dreamliners were serviced by an Indian engineering company, along with a subsidiary of the Singaporean carrier.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, Praful Patel, a former Indian civil aviation minister, questioned Singapore Airlines\u2019 \u201cdeafening silence\u201d on the crash, claiming: \u201cThey seem to be in hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Singapore Airlines had shared a statement of condolence with media on the day of the crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group extends our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of everyone affected by the devastating Air India flight AI171 accident,\u201d the airline reiterated in a statement to the Financial Times.<\/p>\n<p>Chandrasekaran said Goh Choon Phong, the group\u2019s chief executive, had been \u201cin constant touch\u201d with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince we took over [Vistara], they have helped us in many dimensions,\u201d he told the Economic Times. \u201cEven some of the safety procedures, the best processes, we have taken from Singapore Airlines.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d548ef96-12bb-492c-8b31-639af9741475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
