{"id":14737,"date":"2025-07-02T08:00:28","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T08:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14737"},"modified":"2025-07-02T08:00:29","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T08:00:29","slug":"donald-trump-threatens-to-raise-tariffs-again-on-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=14737","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump threatens to raise tariffs again on Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\">Your guide to what Trump\u2019s second term means for Washington, business and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=0e65cca5-bf5b-4596-873e-e8c0502a9fda&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Donald Trump has threatened to increase levies on Japan and has cast doubt that the US would reach a deal with its Asian ally, as he escalated his trade rhetoric days before his pause on some steep tariffs is set to expire. <\/p>\n<p>The US president said he would impose new levies on countries that failed to agree a trade deal by July 9, when the \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs unleashed in April are set to resume.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also singled out Tokyo, a crucial trading partner that had been among the first countries to seek a deal with Trump after he shocked global markets in April by launching a global trade war on \u201cliberation day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve dealt with Japan. I\u2019m not sure we\u2019re going to make a deal. I doubt it,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll write them a letter to say \u2018we thank you very much, and we know you can\u2019t do the kind of things that we need, and therefore you pay a 30 per cent, 35 per cent\u2019 or whatever the number is that we determined,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause we also have a very big trade deficit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Japanese markets fell on Wednesday, with the exporter-oriented Nikkei 225 index declining 0.5 per cent by early afternoon and the benchmark Topix up 0.1 per cent. The yen edged down 0.2 per cent against the dollar to trade around \u00a5143.75.<\/p>\n<p>The comments from the president suggested Trump remained willing to take a hard line on negotiations with trading partners, despite backing down on his higher global tariffs earlier this year in the face of deep market turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>The US imposed a tariff of 24 per cent on all imports from Japan on Trump\u2019s so-called liberation day on April 2, before temporarily lowering it to 10 per cent for 90 days to allow talks to take place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump claimed at the time that he would sign 90 deals during the 90-day hiatus, although only the UK has struck a new trade agreement with the US. <\/p>\n<p>The threat to increase tariffs on the world\u2019s fourth-largest economy will heighten fears that Trump will reignite a global trade war if his officials fail to line up countries before his own deadline next week.<\/p>\n<p>The president told reporters on Air Force One on Tuesday that he was not considering extending next week\u2019s deadline for any countries to allow talks to continue. <\/p>\n<p>He has accused Japan of being \u201cspoiled\u201d and refusing to commit to buying more American rice or to allow US-manufactured cars into its market. <\/p>\n<p>Cars are the principal driver by value of Japan\u2019s large goods trade surplus with the US, which stood at $63bn for the most recent financial year, followed by industrial machinery and electrical machinery. Japan\u2019s largest imports from the US were power generation machinery, energy and cereals.<\/p>\n<p>Japan already faces a 10 per cent tariff on most of its exports to the US, but Japanese cars and car parts are also subject to a 25 per cent border tax tariff. Steel and aluminium face a 50 per cent levy.<\/p>\n<p>US and Japanese trade officials have been locked in intense negotiations since earlier this year. Japan is slowly accepting that it will not be exempt from automotive tariffs, according to one person familiar with the talks, but it wants a guarantee that any deal struck will be final. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cJapan is digging its heels in with an insistence that the US agrees that, whatever the deal is, this really is it, and there will not be any further tariff hikes. Japanese companies need to know exactly what the tariff will be and start planning for that, and so Tokyo is negotiating for a deal that represents a covenant the US will stick to,\u201d said the
