{"id":15208,"date":"2025-12-02T11:17:31","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T11:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=15208"},"modified":"2025-12-02T11:17:32","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T11:17:32","slug":"eurozone-inflation-unexpectedly-rises-to-2-2-in-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=15208","title":{"rendered":"Eurozone inflation unexpectedly rises to 2.2% in November"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=4f041997-9674-4ae4-ab78-6fed4036dcdf\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Eurozone inflation unexpectedly rose to 2.2 per cent in November, surpassing the European Central Bank\u2019s 2 per cent target for the third month in a row as services prices continued to creep up. <\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s annual figure was above the prediction by economists in a Reuters poll that inflation would hold steady at 2.1 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The increase comes after annual inflation in the currency area\u2019s largest member state, Germany, rose to 2.6 per cent in November from 2.3 per cent in October, higher than analysts forecast.<\/p>\n<p>The closely watched figure for services inflation \u2014 a gauge for domestic price pressures that has remained well above the ECB\u2019s medium-term 2 per cent target for more than three years \u2014 increased for the third month in a row. At 3.5 per cent in November, it reached the highest level since April.<\/p>\n<p>Core inflation, excluding volatile food and energy prices, remained steady at October\u2019s level of 2.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Nellis, economics professor and adviser to accountancy firm MHA, said the trend of a slowing pace of inflation was \u201cintact but still fragile\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, data on Tuesday showed that the unemployment rate in the currency bloc unexpectedly came in at 6.4 per cent for October, higher than economists\u2019 6.3 per cent forecast.<\/p>\n<p>The ECB, which will meet for the last time this year on December 18, is expected to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 2 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>ECB president Christine Lagarde said last Friday that the rates \u201cwe settled on at the last meetings are, in my view, set correctly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Market expectations for rate cuts were stable following the inflation data release, with swaps contracts continuing to imply only a roughly 30 per cent chance of a quarter-point rate cut by the ECB\u2019s June meeting next year. Previously, the central bank made eight cuts between mid-2024 and mid-2025 that halved borrowing costs.<\/p>\n<p>Diego Iscaro, an economist at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, called November\u2019s inflation data \u201cdisappointing\u201d and stressed that it would \u201ccement markets\u2019 expectations that the ECB will keep rates on hold\u201d this month.
