Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have fled their homes in northern Gaza after Israel ordered them to move to the coastal strip\u2019s south and Israeli forces extended the bombardment of the densely populated enclave.<\/p>\n

Israel has ordered 1.1mn Palestinian civilians \u2014 nearly half of Gaza\u2019s population \u2014 to leave the northern part of the 40km impoverished strip ahead of an expected full-scale ground invasion against Hamas, the militant group that staged a cross-border attack last Saturday.<\/p>\n

Israeli authorities said Hamas killed at least 1,300 Israelis, mainly civilians, in the assault on southern Israel. At least 2,515 people \u2014 1,182 of them women and children \u2014 have been killed in Gaza, Palestinian health officials said, since Israel started its bombardment.<\/p>\n

Efforts are under way to enable certain foreign nationals to leave Gaza via the Rafah crossing into Egypt, after Israel told diplomats that it would allow some departures on Saturday.<\/p>\n

However, no foreign nationals have been allowed to leave, according to three diplomats working on the issue. One diplomat said that convoys had been moving \u201cback and forth\u201d, with conflicting reports over why the border had not opened.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A US official said they encouraged people to go to the crossing but that the situation kept changing.<\/p>\n

The evacuation order, which Israel said it issued to protect civilians, has been condemned by the UN while the EU\u2019s chief diplomat said on Saturday that Israel needed to respect international law.<\/p>\n

Josep Borrell said the order was impractical and aggravated the humanitarian crisis in the territory.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s utterly, utterly impossible to implement,\u201d Borrell said during a visit to Beijing on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Israeli military declined to discuss any deadlines, but reiterated its demand that civilians leave as soon as possible. \u201cFollow our instructions \u2014 move south,\u201d said Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces. <\/p>\n

Israel said it would refrain from bombing two roads heading south for six hours on Saturday. <\/p>\n

Ayman al-Safadi, Jordan\u2019s foreign minister, said Israel\u2019s order to Palestinians to leave northern Gaza when war was \u201craging\u201d was a \u201cflagrant violation of international law,<\/strong> international humanitarian law and the law of war\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said on Saturday that Israel\u2019s offensive was causing a humanitarian catastrophe that represented the \u201ccollective punishment of more than 2mn Palestinians\u201d and was \u201cpushing the entire region towards the abyss\u201d.<\/p>\n

After meeting Qatar\u2019s prime minister on Friday, Antony Blinken, US secretary of state, said Washington continued \u201cto discuss with Israel the importance of taking every possible precaution to avoid harming civilians\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognise that many Palestinian families in Gaza are suffering through no fault of their own, and that Palestinian civilians have lost their lives,\u201d said Blinken, while reiterating that Israel had a right to defend its citizens. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe know the humanitarian situation is urgent. We\u2019re actively engaged with partners, including Qatar, to get aid to those who need it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Qatar, a US ally which hosts Hamas\u2019s political office, is also seeking to secure the release of hostages seized by Hamas during its attack. Israel has identified 120 hostages, Hecht said. <\/p>\n

Gaza\u2019s border with Egypt, the strip\u2019s only exit not controlled by Israel, remained largely closed, leaving no way out for the 2.3mn Palestinians hemmed inside the enclave since Israel imposed a 2007 blockade in response to Hamas\u2019s violent takeover of the territory.<\/p>\n

Israel has cut off food, fresh water and electricity to Gaza, after defence minister Yoav Gallant declared a \u201ccomplete siege\u201d this week. The UN said water supplies were drastically low, with people forced to drink brackish water, raising fears of disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeath is better than this life,\u201d said Mona Hanafy, 55, who took refuge in a UN-run school after her home in Gaza City was destroyed. \u201cThere are very few bathrooms and there is no water. We have only eaten biscuits since yesterday. We went to a supermarket but found nothing there.\u201d<\/p>\n

IDF spokesperson Jonathan Conricus said on Saturday that Israel intended to \u201cenhance our military operations\u201d in Gaza City, the largest city in the densely crowded enclave and a centre of Hamas\u2019s political and military apparatus.<\/p>\n

The IDF said on Friday that Israeli special forces had entered Gaza in the first known incursion since a 2014 war, searching for hostages. They collected \u201cevidence that would assist in the effort to locate hostages\u201d, and fired at Hamas anti-tank missile crews attacking Israel.<\/p>\n

Hamas has indicated it intended to trade the hostages for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. <\/p>\n

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said on Friday that hundreds of thousands of Gazans were fleeing south in cars, trucks and carts as fuel shortages and destroyed roads hampered their escape. Others were either choosing to stay or were unable to leave. <\/p>\n

The displacement amounted to a second \u201cNakba<\/em>\u201d or catastrophe \u2014 the term used by Palestinians to describe their eviction from their homeland after the formation of the State of Israel in 1948 \u2014 Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas said on Friday. <\/p>\n

Jan Egeland, the Norwegian former diplomat who was involved with the Oslo Accord, told BBC: \u201cThere are hundreds of thousands of people fleeing for their life \u2014 [that is] not something that should be called an evacuation. It is a forcible transfer of people from all of northern Gaza, which according to the Geneva Convention is a war crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that the war would \u201ctake time\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re striking our enemies with unprecedented power,\u201d Netanyahu said in a rare Shabbat address. \u201cThis is only the beginning. Our enemies are only starting to pay the price.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Israel\u2019s northern border with Lebanon, Iran-backed Hizbollah fighters fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli soldiers, sent two drones into Israel and fired surface-to-air missiles at Israeli aircraft, Conricus said on Saturday. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation on the northern border remains very tense,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
