\n Microsoft has completed its takeover of Activision Blizzard, the maker of \u201cCall of Duty\u201d and other hit video games, closing one of the biggest tech deals of all time.\n <\/p>\n

\n The company said in a filing Friday with the US Securities and Exchange Commission that Activision (ATVI) had now become a wholly-owned subsidiary.\n <\/p>\n

\n Earlier on Friday, UK antitrust officials approved the planned acquisition, removing the final regulatory hurdle to the deal closing.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Competition and Markets Authority said <\/strong>the merger had been cleared after the companies agreed to give up certain cloud gaming rights. The concession is \u201ca game-changer\u201d that will allow \u201ccompetitive prices and better services,\u201d the CMA said in a statement.\n <\/p>\n

\n Microsoft (MSFT) unveiled <\/strong>the deal in early 2022, but it was blocked in April by the UK competition regulator.\n <\/p>\n

\n The CMA was the only regulator worldwide standing in the way of the landmark acquisition, which was valued at $69 billion when it was first announced.\n <\/p>\n

\n The UK regulator <\/strong>had concerns about competition in the cloud gaming market, saying Microsoft could seek to make Activision\u2019s games exclusive to its own platforms, and then increase the cost of user subscriptions, leaving gamers with less choice.\n <\/p>\n

\n In August, Microsoft and Activision addressed those concerns by revising the deal.\n <\/p>\n

\n They proposed a restructured merger, which would allow Activision\u2019s cloud streaming rights outside the European Union and three other European countries to be sold to a rival, Ubisoft Entertainment.\n <\/p>\n

\n That appeased the CMA, which signaled last month that it would most likely approve the reworked takeover.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe new deal will stop Microsoft from locking up competition in cloud gaming,\u201d the agency said Friday.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt will also help to ensure that cloud gaming providers will be able to use non-Windows operating systems for Activision content, reducing costs and increasing efficiency.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Activision Blizzard is one of the world\u2019s biggest video game developers. Alongside \u201cCall of Duty,\u201d it also produces \u201cWorld of Warcraft\u201d and \u201cOverwatch.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Microsoft, which sells the Xbox gaming console, offers a popular video game subscription service called Xbox Game Pass, as well as a cloud-based video game streaming service.\n <\/p>\n

\n The acquisition is expected to help Microsoft boost its standing in the gaming industry and better compete with market leaders Tencent and Sony.\n <\/p>\n

\n In a statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Microsoft President Brad Smith said \u201cwe\u2019re grateful for the CMA\u2019s thorough review and decision.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
