{"id":2726,"date":"2023-10-18T13:43:07","date_gmt":"2023-10-18T13:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/five-eyes-spy-chiefs-warn-silicon-valley-over-chinese-threat\/"},"modified":"2023-10-18T13:43:07","modified_gmt":"2023-10-18T13:43:07","slug":"five-eyes-spy-chiefs-warn-silicon-valley-over-chinese-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=2726","title":{"rendered":"Five Eyes spy chiefs warn Silicon Valley over Chinese threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Simply sign up to the <!-- -->Cyber Security<!-- --> myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=0a37da0a-ad06-43d0-b069-bfafa0ff35a4&amp;concept-id=146af07b-ba26-4293-9aa8-d900930ac78f\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The heads of security services in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have urged the world to step up efforts to shield innovation from \u201cunprecedented\u201d Chinese spying.<\/p>\n<p>FBI director Christopher Wray on Tuesday hosted counterparts from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network in Silicon Valley to raise awareness about risks posed by China in high-tech sectors from quantum computing and artificial intelligence to synthetic biology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the very first time the heads of our five agencies have appeared together publicly on any topic \u2014 an unprecedented event to confront an unprecedented threat,\u201d Wray said. \u201cThere\u2019s a single common thread in just about every conversation about protecting innovation\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009and that is the Chinese government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wray and his counterparts launched the inaugural Emerging Technology and Securing Innovation Security Summit at Stanford University in an increased effort to draw attention to the risks. The security chiefs, who included MI5 director-general Ken McCallum of the UK, also met business leaders and entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>They were joined by Mike Burgess, head of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, David Vigneault, director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, and New Zealand Security Intelligence Service chief Andrew Hampton.<\/p>\n<p>Burgess said that while \u201call nations spy\u201d China was engaging in a range of actions, including intellectual property theft, that went beyond traditional espionage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chinese government is engaged in the most sustained, scaled and sophisticated theft of intellectual property and expertise in human history,\u201d he said. \u201cChina has developed a ruthless business model aimed at seizing commercial advantage\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009stealing intellectual property is the first step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US and its allies are becoming more vocal in raising concern about China\u2019s military activity and efforts to influence domestic policies in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>China has responded that the US and its allies are trying to contain China and impede its economic rise in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The spy chiefs said China was increasingly targeting companies to obtain technology. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re anywhere close to the cutting edge of tech, you might not be interested in geopolitics, but geopolitics is interested in you,\u201d McCallum said. \u201cSo, we\u2019re coming together at this summit to reach a much wider audience than we\u2019ve had to in the past.\u201d He said MI5 investigations into covert Chinese activity had risen sevenfold since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Hampton said business leaders were \u201cincreasingly aware\u201d of the challenges and \u201cthe need to be clear eyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vigneault said the five countries faced a \u201ccat and mouse\u201d challenge as Beijing was constantly adapting to efforts by western security services to crack down on spying. He said Chinese spies were increasingly operating in more covert and nuanced ways. <\/p>\n<p>But he said China was also helping the west to raise awareness of the threat with its actions. \u201cThe PRC has been the best advocate [for us] because they have been so bold,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>China on Wednesday described the allegations from the Five Eyes partners as \u201cbaseless\u201d and \u201cfilled with smears\u201d and\u00a0said it had worked to protect intellectual property rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Five Eyes Alliance\u2019 is the world\u2019s largest intelligence organisation, accustomed to producing and spreading false information about China,\u201d it said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It accused the US of \u201cindiscriminate eavesdropping and espionage on information worldwide, not even sparing its own allies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Additional reporting by Joe Leahy in Beijing<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0a37da0a-ad06-43d0-b069-bfafa0ff35a4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stay informed with free updates Simply sign up to the Cyber Security myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.
