{"id":2917,"date":"2023-10-18T22:47:14","date_gmt":"2023-10-18T22:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/universal-music-sues-anthropic-over-ai-generated-lyrics\/"},"modified":"2023-10-18T22:47:14","modified_gmt":"2023-10-18T22:47:14","slug":"universal-music-sues-anthropic-over-ai-generated-lyrics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=2917","title":{"rendered":"Universal Music sues Anthropic over AI-generated lyrics"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=0965d962-5c54-4fdc-aef8-18e4ef3b9df5\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Universal Music has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against artificial intelligence start-up Anthropic, as the world\u2019s largest music group battles against chatbots that churn out its artists\u2019 lyrics. <\/p>\n<p>Universal and two other music companies allege that Anthropic scrapes their songs without permission and uses them to generate \u201cidentical or nearly identical copies of those lyrics\u201d via Claude, its rival to ChatGPT. <\/p>\n<p>When Claude is asked for lyrics to the song \u201cI Will Survive\u201d by Gloria Gaynor, for example, it responds with \u201ca nearly word-for-word copy of those lyrics\u201d, Universal, Concord and ABKCO said in a filing with a US court in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis copyrighted material is not free for the taking simply because it can be found on the internet,\u201d the music companies said, while claiming that Anthropic had \u201cnever even attempted\u201d to license their copyrighted work.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit comes as the music industry is grappling with the rise of AI technology that can produce \u201cdeepfake\u201d songs that mimic the voices, lyrics or sound of established musicians. The issue drew attention earlier this year after an AI-produced song that mimicked the voices of Drake and The Weeknd spread online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic, a leading AI start-up, was founded in 2021 by a group of researchers who left Microsoft-backed OpenAI over a dispute over the company\u2019s direction. It has drawn investments from Amazon and Google.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to regurgitating lyrics, Claude responded to prompts asking for writing in the style of popular musicians with unlicensed lyrics, the music companies alleged. \u201cWhen we asked\u00a0the AI model to write a piece of short fiction in the style of Louis Armstrong, it uses the lyrics for \u2018What a Wonderful World\u2019,\u201d the companies said in the filing. <\/p>\n<p>The concern over AI technology has echoes of the music industry\u2019s copyright battles in the 2000s against new technology services including Napster, which enabled pirating of music.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Universal, home to Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, earlier on Wednesday announced a partnership with music platform BandLab to approach copyrights \u201cethically\u201d for use in AI, with proper copyrights and permission. <\/p>\n<p>Universal is separately working with Google to license its artists\u2019 voices and melodies to be used in AI-generated songs, the Financial Times reported in August. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublishers embrace innovation and recognise the great promise of AI when used ethically and responsibly.
