{"id":4206,"date":"2023-10-22T09:08:45","date_gmt":"2023-10-22T09:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/china-launches-investigation-into-iphone-maker-foxconn-says-state-media\/"},"modified":"2023-10-22T09:08:45","modified_gmt":"2023-10-22T09:08:45","slug":"china-launches-investigation-into-iphone-maker-foxconn-says-state-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=4206","title":{"rendered":"China launches investigation into iPhone maker Foxconn, says state media"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Simply sign up to the <!-- -->Technology sector<!-- --> myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=e6abcb86-1c80-4914-ae54-c7df94d7a9e0&amp;concept-id=6b32f2c1-da43-4e19-80b9-8aef4ab640d7\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>China has launched an investigation into Apple\u2019s iPhone maker Foxconn over tax and land use, Chinese state media reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Times, citing anonymous sources, said tax authorities inspected Foxconn\u2019s sites in the provinces of Guangdong and Jiangsu and natural resources officials had inspected sites in Henan and Hubei.<\/p>\n<p>The Financial Times has not verified the reports and Foxconn did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Times article quoted an expert saying \u201cTaiwan-funded enterprises, including Foxconn\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009should also assume corresponding social responsibilities and play a positive role in promoting the peaceful development of cross-strait relations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Foxconn founder Terry Gou is running as an independent candidate in Taiwan\u2019s presidential elections in January, a contest that will have a significant influence on Taiwan\u2019s relationship with China and tensions in the Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n<p>Gou, who handed Foxconn management to a successor chief executive four years ago, resigned his seat on the board in early September after announcing his presidential run, but retains a 12.5 per cent stake in the company.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing has in the past targeted local subsidiaries of Taiwanese companies with regulatory probes and political pressure at sensitive or tense times. Chinese officials frequently urge Taiwanese companies to help promote \u201cpeaceful development\u201d between the two sides.<\/p>\n<p>China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and reserves the option to take the island with force if Taipei resists unification. The People\u2019s Liberation Army is continuously stepping up moves to probe the airspace and waters near Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>Gou trails all other three presidential candidates so far with a support rating of just 7 per cent, according to a poll conducted this week by Formosa, one of Taiwan\u2019s leading pollsters. <\/p>\n<p>The founder insists that despite his decades of doing business in China, which has made Foxconn the country\u2019s largest private employer and exporter, he is not doing China\u2019s bidding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Chinese Communist party regime were to say \u2018If you don\u2019t listen to me, I\u2019ll confiscate your assets from Foxconn,\u2019 I would say \u2018Yes, please, do it!\u2019\u201d Gou said at the announcement of his presidential run on August 28. \u201cI cannot comply with their orders. I won\u2019t be threatened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apple is also trying to navigate an increasingly complex relationship with China at a time of historic tensions between Beijing and Washington. Last week, Apple chief executive Tim Cook travelled to China and met with members of Xi Jinping\u2019s leadership team, including Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang and China\u2019s commerce and information technology ministers.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese government departments and state-owned enterprises have in recent months banned\u00a0or discouraged employees from using Apple devices.
