Republicans in the House face another week of uncertainty as several members lined up as candidates to become the next speaker. <\/p>\n

California Republican Kevin McCarthy, the former house speaker, endorsed Rep. Tom Emmer (R., Minn.) in an appearance on NBC News\u2019 Meet the Press<\/em>. \u201cWe need to get him elected this week and move on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThis is not a time to play games,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cThis is embarrassing for the Republican party. It\u2019s embarrassing for the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawmakers dropped Rep. Jim Jordan (R., Ohio) as the leading candidate on Friday after he failed to win enough votes on the floor to get the gavel. Republicans plan to meet again late Monday to hear from each of the candidates, with a possible party vote to nominate one of them as early as Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Congress faces a Nov. 17 deadline to figure out how to fund the government and a White House request for about $100 billion in aid for Israel, Ukraine, and border security but is unable to act on either without a speaker.<\/p>\n

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Kent.) told CBS News\u2019 Face the Nation<\/em> that the vacuum is \u201ca problem, but I hope it\u2019s going to get solved pretty quickly.\u201d <\/p>\n

Congress has been in chaos since Oct. 3, when a group of Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida pushed the ouster of McCarthy from the role.<\/p>\n

Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R., La.) was first to step up as a candidate but bowed out when he couldn\u2019t secure enough support. Then Jordan stepped up, but his bid lost momentum late last week.<\/p>\n

Emmer, the House majority whip, said on social media on Saturday that he was running to bring the conference together. \u201cOur Conference remains at a crossroads and the deck is stacked against us,\u201d he said in a post on X, the former Twitter.<\/p>\n

Eight other candidates include Rep. Kevin Hern\u00a0of Oklahoma, Rep.\u00a0Byron Donalds\u00a0of Florida, Rep.\u00a0Mike Johnson of Louisiana,\u00a0Rep.\u00a0Jack Bergman of Michigan, Rep.\u00a0Austin Scott of Georgia, Rep.\u00a0Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania, Rep. Gary Palmer of Alabama, and Rep.\u00a0Pete Sessions\u00a0of Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ohio Republican Rep. Mike Turner told CNN\u2019s State of the Union<\/em> that it\u2019s going to be hard for anyone to get the needed 217 votes, assuming all lawmakers are present and voting. He also compared the House to high school. \u201cHopefully we\u2019ll get past this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, getting to 217 is obviously going to be very difficult and is the sort of Rubik\u2019s Cube of the answer to all of this,\u201d Turner said.<\/p>\n

Texas Republican Michael McCaul told ABC News\u2019 This Week<\/em> that the drama is \u201cprobably one of the most embarrassing things I\u2019ve seen\u201d in 10 terms in Congress.<\/p>\n

Asked if he would work with Democrats to elect a speaker, McCaul said: \u201cI\u2019d rather it be the Republicans nominating and voting on the floor for a Republican speaker, but this can\u2019t go on forever. I don\u2019t know if we\u2019re going to have a speaker next week. I don\u2019t know how this plays out.\u201d<\/p>\n
