{"id":5401,"date":"2023-10-25T18:13:46","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T18:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/nightmare-hurricane-otis-slams-into-acapulco-in-mexico\/"},"modified":"2023-10-25T18:13:46","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T18:13:46","slug":"nightmare-hurricane-otis-slams-into-acapulco-in-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=5401","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Nightmare\u2019 hurricane Otis slams into Acapulco in Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=3b89d027-5ad0-487b-8660-e65a160cbff3\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>A hurricane of record intensity smashed into the Mexican coast near the resort of Acapulco in the early hours of Wednesday, catching authorities unprepared and leading to warnings about flash floods and landslides.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Otis presented a \u201cnightmare scenario\u201d for southern Mexico, according to the US National Hurricane Center, because it strengthened at an extraordinarily fast rate, leaving little time for authorities to respond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no hurricanes on record even close to this intensity for this part of Mexico,\u201d said Eric Blake, the centre\u2019s senior hurricane specialist. <\/p>\n<p>Within 24 hours Otis went from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, and slammed into the coast with maximum sustained winds of 270km per hour (165mph).<\/p>\n<p>Waves of more than 10m in height were cited by Mexican authorities, and local television stations and images on social media showed swamped streets, flooded hospitals and even destroyed furniture in <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/partida_tania\/status\/1717130563499569467\" data-trackable=\"link\">hotel rooms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the full extent of the damage was still unclear, even to government leaders and authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of now we don\u2019t have information of deaths but there is no communication. We don\u2019t know,\u201d President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador told his regular morning news conference on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez Obrador said there were reports of material damage including landslides on the main motorway into Acapulco, but that the main concerns were about communities along the coastal road between Acapulco and Zihuatanejo, known as the Costa Grande.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2081\" height=\"1387\"><\/source><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/https:\/\/d1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net\/production\/7c9d33bb-45ea-4775-8879-e28614499b5f.jpg\" alt=\"A highway blocked by a landslide triggered by hurricane Otis near Acapulco\" data-image-type=\"image\" width=\"2081\" height=\"1387\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>A highway blocked by a landslide triggered by hurricane Otis near Acapulco<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Acapulco, a city of around 800,000 people on Mexico\u2019s south Pacific Coast, is in Guerrero, one of the country\u2019s poorest states. The city once associated with Hollywood glamour plays host to luxury resorts favoured by residents of capital Mexico City, but now has more than half of its population living in poverty, according to government statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Local authorities have set up temporary shelters for residents and urged them not to leave their homes if they remained safe there. NetBlocks, a non-profit group that tracks internet disruptions, said that multiple municipalities in Guerrero had <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/netblocks\/status\/1717170732008939694?s=20\" data-trackable=\"link\">no connectivity at all<\/a> after the hurricane hit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have warned that climate change intensifies weather patterns, leading to more extreme heatwaves, droughts and storms. During hurricanes, the warmer temperatures mean more moisture is held in the air and then released as rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>The El Ni\u00f1o weather phenomenon, which warms the water over the Pacific Ocean, exacerbates the extreme conditions as it pushes more heat into an already warmed atmosphere. The past four months have already proved to be the hottest on record globally, with sea surface average temperatures also at their peak.<\/p>\n<p>The US National Hurricane\u00a0Center\u2019s Blake described on social media feeling \u201csick\u201d watching Otis develop from a moderate tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in less than 24 hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was difficult to know immediately what drove the hurricane to increase in intensity so quickly despite the weather models not forecasting it, said Phil Klotzbach, senior research scientist at Colorado State University. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOtis really blew up,\u201d said Klotzbach. \u201cThere is rapid intensification\u00a0\u2014 and then there is what Otis did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Otis follows just weeks after hurricane Lidia hit near the beach resort of Puerto Vallarta, also on the Pacific Coast, after it rapidly strengthened to Category 4.<\/p>\n<p>The centre was also tracking hurricane Tammy across the north Atlantic and Caribbean; it was located south-east of Bermuda late on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>Scientists at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in August increased their prediction for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season to be \u201cabove-normal\u201d, due to record-warm sea surface temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cartography by Steven Bernard<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3b89d027-5ad0-487b-8660-e65a160cbff3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.
