Nearly a year after Microsoft launched ChatGPT, the answer is in the cloud. While Microsoft\u2019s Azure revenue grew faster than investors expected, Alphabet\u2019s cloud revenue disappointed, according to <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/24\/wall-street-wants-to-know-how-googles-going-to-profit-from-ai.html\">CNBC<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Why did Microsoft prevail in cloud services? The software giant\u2019s OpenAI customer count rose 65% and Azure\u2019s revenue share from Generative AI grew to 3%, <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/24\/microsoft-msft-q1-earnings-report-2024.html\">CNBC<\/em><em> <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, in response to investor questions about monetizing Generative AI, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said it\u2019s still \u201cearly days,\u201d <em>CNBC<\/em> noted.<\/p>\n<p>This is ironic since former Google researcher Aidan Gomez \u2014 now CEO of Cohere, a large language model startup \u2014 co-authored the 2017 paper on transformers that contributed heavily to the success of Generative AI chatbots.<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s successes intensify the pressure on CEOs to answer the key question: Is your company monetizing Generative AI?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Microsoft\u2019s Expectations-Beating Fiscal Year 2024 Q1 Earnings<\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft exceeded FY 2024 Q1 expectations and raised guidance. Here are the key numbers, from <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/24\/microsoft-msft-q1-earnings-report-2024.html\">CNBC<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Q1 revenue up 13% to $56.52 billion<\/strong> \u2014 more than $2 billion above analysts\u2019 expectations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q1 earnings per share up 27% to $2.99 <\/strong>\u2014 35 cents per share above expectations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q1 Intelligent Cloud revenue up 19% to $24.26 billion <\/strong>\u2014 $761 million above consensus among analysts surveyed by <em>StreetAccount.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Q2 revenue forecast up 15% to about $61 billion<\/strong> \u2014 roughly equal to the consensus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q2 Azure growth forecast of 26% to 27%<\/strong> \u2014 after 28% Q1 growth. Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said Azure expects \u201can increasing contribution from artificial intelligence,\u201d <em>CNBC<\/em> reported.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Investors are focused on Microsoft\u2019s cloud results and Generative AI revenue. Cloud customers are seeking to get more benefit from their spending on Microsoft\u2019s product.<\/p>\n<p>The company is \u201cstill helping customers use the Microsoft Cloud to get the most value out of their digital spend,\u201d CEO Satya Nadella said in the earnings release. Hood said clients \u201care still finding ways to save money on cloud spending,\u201d <em>CNBC<\/em> noted.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most importantly, Microsoft is putting numbers on the payoff from its investment in Generative AI. The software giant reported its Azure OpenAI Service customer count has grown 64% to 18,000 since July 2023 because Azure has higher capacity resulting from more graphics processing units.<\/p>\n<p>Hood said about three percentage points of the Azure unit\u2019s growth was attributable to AI \u2014 more than the 2% she forecast in July 2023, <em>CNBC<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s capital expenditures increased 70% from a year earlier to a record $11.2 billion. This increase reflects the company\u2019s \u201cinvestment in AI,\u201d the <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/earnings\/microsoft-msft-q1-earnings-report-2024-b19e51eb\">Wall Street Journal<\/em> reported. While still a small business for Microsoft, \u201canalysts and investors expect it to start contributing to the company\u2019s bottom line in a much larger way in the future,\u201d the <em>Journal<\/em> noted.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft did not specify the revenue lift from the company\u2019s 365 Copilot AI add-on for existing productivity software subscriptions. The company will charge $30 per person per month for Copilot which will become available to large companies Nov. 1. Hood said Copilot\u2019s revenue would \u201cgrow gradually over time,\u201d <em>CNBC<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Alphabet\u2019s Unsatisfying Q3 Results And Forecast<\/h2>\n<p>Alphabet\u2019s third quarter results were mixed \u2014 with strong growth in advertising but disappointment in its cloud growth. Here are the key numbers, according to <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/24\/alphabet-googl-earnings-q3-2023.html\">CNBC<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Q3 revenue up 11% to $76.69 billion<\/strong> \u2014 $720 million above LSEG\u2019s tally of analysts\u2019 expectations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q3 earnings per share of $1.55 <\/strong>\u2014 10 cents per share above expectations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q3 YouTube advertising revenue up 19% to $7.95 billion <\/strong>\u2014 $161 million above consensus among analysts surveyed by <em>StreetAccount.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Q3 Cloud revenue up 22% to $8.41 billion<\/strong> \u2014 $230 million short of consensus, according to <em>StreetAccount.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alphabet was proud of the performance by its cloud unit. Cloud growth \u201cremained strong across geographies, industries and products,\u201d said CFO Ruth Porat on the investor call. Nevertheless, cloud \u201cclients [were] reeling in their spending,\u201d according to <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/24\/alphabet-googl-earnings-q3-2023.html\">CNBC<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One analyst expressed hopes Alphabet\u2019s cloud unit would grow faster and more profitably. In an interview with CNBC, Portfolio Wealth Advisors Chief Investment Officer Lee Munson said, \u201cIf you want this stock to keep going higher, you\u2019ve got to have cloud become more profitable. It\u2019s a third-rate cloud platform. We need to see it make money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Investors asked about how Alphabet would monetize its Generative AI investments. \u201cWe\u2019ll do everything that is needed to make sure we have the leading AI models and infrastructure in the world, bar none, and will continue driving efficiencies from there,\u201d Pichai said, per a <em>Journal<\/em> report.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Could Alphabet Deliver A Generative AI Upside Surprise?<\/h2>\n<p>Investors seem to be evaluating Microsoft and Alphabet based on their expectations for cloud services growth. Microsoft demonstrated Tuesday the strong connection between ChatGPT and growing customer demand for cloud services.<\/p>\n<p>I am not surprised analysts asked Pichai about how Alphabet will monetize its Generative AI investment. \u201cThe topic of how the company will monetize AI came up several times throughout Tuesday\u2019s conference call\u2019s question-and-answer portion with investors and analysts,\u201d <em>CNBC<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Since ChatGPT\u2019s November 2022 launch, Google has released its own chatbot, Bard. Among its other AI experiments is Search Generative Experience \u2014 \u201cwhich lets users see what a generative AI experience would look like when searching for products,\u201d noted <em>CNBC<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts asked Pichai about SGE. Lloyd Walmsley of Deutsche Bank said, \u201cAs we just think about the rollout of SGE across a user base. Like, how far along is that? And how do you balance the product rollout and consumer uptake versus monetization in that transition?,\u201d<em> CNBC<\/em> wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Alphabet\u2019s response was relatively vague. \u201cOn the first part of our SG, we are still very early days in terms of how much we have rolled it out. But we have definitely gotten it out to enough people and both geographically across user segments and enough to know that the product is working well,\u201d Pichai responded.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the vagueness, Alphabet revealed some room for hope of monetization in two areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>YouTube.<\/strong> For YouTube advertisers, AI is helping businesses find \u201ctheir ideal audience for the lowest possible price,\u201d according to Alphabet\u2019s Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler. \u201cEarly tests are delivering 54% more reach at 42% lower cost\u201d \u2014 helping \u201cbrands like Samsung and Toyota,\u201d Schindler added.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Performance Max. <\/strong>This service enables advertisers to access all of their Google Ads inventory from a single campaign \u2014 which was recently updated with AI features. \u2033Those using it achieve like an average over 18% more conversions at a similar cost per action,\u201d according to Pichai, who added per CNBC\u2019s report that 80% of Alphabet advertisers already use at least one AI-powered search feature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If Alphabet \u2014 which seems to be downplaying Generative AI revenue in the near term \u2014 can do better than expectations, buying its shares on today\u2019s dip could be a good bet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/petercohan\/2023\/10\/25\/microsoft-leads-alphabet-in-the-race-to-monetize-generative-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft\u2019s early lead over Alphabet in Generative AI is paying off.
