\n The founder of the world\u2019s biggest chipmaker,\u00a0Morris\u00a0Chang, said on Thursday that increasing tensions over technology between the United States and China will slow down the global chip industry.\n <\/p>\n

\n Chang, who founded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co\u00a0in the late 1980s, made the remarks at an event hosted by the Asia Society in New York. The company has helped the democratically governed island of Taiwan become the world\u2019s leading producer of advanced chips.\n <\/p>\n

\n US officials earlier this month enacted another set of export restrictions that\u00a0clamped down\u00a0on what chips and chipmaking tools can be exported to China after Huawei\u00a0last month\u00a0showed off\u00a0a phone with a new domestically manufactured chip.\n <\/p>\n

\n Chang, 92, said that cutting off China\u2019s chip industry from the rest of the world would affect other players beyond China.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think that decoupling will ultimately slow down everybody. Of course, the immediate purpose is to slow China down, and I think it\u2019s doing that,\u201d\u00a0Chang\u00a0said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Chang\u00a0said that the effects of such decoupling were already becoming clear and that many previous economic conflicts between established and emerging powers had ended in wars.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt looks like countries are mad at each other, that worries me,\u201d said\u00a0Chang, who characterizes the geopolitical tension between the United States and China as an existing power confronting an emerging power.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cOur only hope is it doesn\u2019t lead to anything even more serious,\u201d\u00a0Chang\u00a0said.\n <\/p>\n

\n He also praised the higher education system in the United States, adding his optimism about the country as TSMC invests to build chipmaking facilities in Arizona.\n <\/p>\n

\n Born and raised in China,\u00a0Chang\u00a0built a career in the United States, where he become a naturalized citizen in 1962, before being recruited to build the chip industry in Taiwan. He is now regarded as a legendary figure in the industry that\u2019s caught in the middle of the geopolitical tension.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI really think this country, which is my country, [the] United States, is still the hope of the world, that\u2019s in spite of all the problems we are having,\u201d said\u00a0Chang.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
