Here are his \u201920 life lessons\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002663413\" role=\"document\">\n<p>Wall Street said goodbye to a legendary figure on Thursday when news broke that Byron Wien had died at the age of 90, according to news reports. <\/p>\n<p>For those who are unfamiliar, Wien gained a large following in global finance for his annual lists of \u201c10 surprises\u201d for the coming year. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>He started publishing the list, which tried to anticipate developments that could blindside investors, in 1986 while working at Morgan Stanley. <\/p>\n<p>He carried on the tradition after joining Blackstone 14 years ago, following a stint at Pequot Capital. <\/p>\n<p>Thanks to his penchant for highlighting ideas and possibilities that often weren\u2019t on the radar of most investment strategists, Wien\u2019s lists were widely read. <\/p>\n<p>But earlier this year, Wien released another list that was published on Blackstone\u2019s website. The title? \u201cByron Wien\u2019s 20 Life Lessons.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>To enjoy a successful life, Wien recommended networking intensely, reading all the time, getting enough sleep and \u2014 last on the list \u2014 never retiring. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the list in full, courtesy of Blackstone: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      \u201cConcentrate on finding a big idea that will make an impact on the people you want to influence. The Ten Surprises, which I started doing in 1986, has been a defining product. People all over the world are aware of it and identify me with it. What they seem to like about it is that I put myself at risk by going on record with these events, which I believe are probable and hold myself accountable at year-end. If you want to be successful and live a long, stimulating life, keep yourself at risk intellectually all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cNetwork intensely. Luck plays a big role in life, and there is no better way to increase your luck than by knowing as many people as possible. Nurture your network by sending articles, books and emails to people to show you\u2019re thinking about them. Write op-eds and thought pieces for major publications. Organize discussion groups to bring your thoughtful friends together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cWhen you meet someone new, treat that person as a friend. Assume he or she is a winner and will become a positive force in your life. Most people wait for others to prove their value. Give them the benefit of the doubt from the start. Occasionally you will be disappointed, but your network will broaden rapidly if you follow this path.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cRead all the time. Don\u2019t just do it because you\u2019re curious about something, read actively. Have a point of view before you start a book or article and see if what you think is confirmed or refuted by the author. If you do that, you will read faster and comprehend more.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cGet enough sleep. Seven hours will do until you\u2019re sixty, eight from sixty to seventy, nine thereafter, which might include eight hours at night and a one-hour afternoon nap.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cEvolve. Try to think of your life in phases so you can avoid a burn-out. Do the numbers crunching in the early phase of your career. Try developing concepts later on. Stay at risk throughout the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cTravel extensively. Try to get everywhere before you wear out. Attempt to meet local interesting people where you travel and keep in contact with them throughout your life. See them when you return to a place.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cWhen meeting someone new, try to find out what formative experience occurred in their lives before they were 17. It is my belief that some important event in everyone\u2019s youth has an influence on everything that occurs afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cOn philanthropy, my approach is to try to relieve pain rather than spread joy. Music, theatre and art museums have many affluent supporters, give the best parties and can add to your social luster in a community. They don\u2019t need you. Social service, hospitals and educational institutions can make the world a better place and help the disadvantaged make their way toward the American dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cYounger people are naturally insecure and tend to overplay their accomplishments. Most people don\u2019t become comfortable with who they are until they\u2019re in their 40\u2019s. By that time, they can underplay their achievements and become a nicer, more likeable person. Try to get to that point as soon as you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cTake the time to give those who work for you a pat on the back when they do good work. Most people are so focused on the next challenge that they fail to thank the people who support them. It is important to do this. It motivates and inspires people and encourages them to perform at a higher level.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cWhen someone extends a kindness to you write them a handwritten note, not an e-mail. Handwritten notes make an impact and are not quickly forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cAt the beginning of every year think of ways you can do your job better than you have ever done it before. Write them down and look at what you have set out for yourself when the year is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cThe hard way is always the right way. Never take shortcuts, except when driving home from the Hamptons. Shortcuts can be construed as sloppiness, a career killer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cDon\u2019t try to be better than your competitors, try to be different. There is always going to be someone smarter than you, but there may not be someone who is more imaginative.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cWhen seeking a career as you come out of school or making a job change, always take the job that looks like it will be the most enjoyable. If it pays the most, you\u2019re lucky. If it doesn\u2019t, take it anyway, I took a severe pay cut to accept each of the two best jobs I\u2019ve ever had, and they both turned out to be exceptionally rewarding financially.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cThere is a perfect job out there for everyone. Most people never find it. Keep looking. The goal of life is to be a happy person, and the right job is essential to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cWhen your children are grown or if you have no children, always find someone younger to mentor. It is very satisfying to help someone steer through life\u2019s obstacles, and you\u2019ll be surprised at how much you will learn in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cEvery year, try doing something you have never done before that is totally out of your comfort zone. It could be running a marathon, attending a conference that interests you on an off-beat subject that will be populated by people very different from your usual circle of associates and friends, or traveling to an obscure destination alone. This will add to the essential process of self-discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cNever retire. If you work forever, you can live forever. I know there is an abundance of biological evidence against this theory, but I\u2019m going with it anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wien released his final \u201c10 surprises\u201d list, for the year 2023, in January. Few of this year\u2019s predictions panned out, save for Wien\u2019s expectations for a hawkish Federal Reserve and a stronger U.S. dollar creating a buying opportunity for Japanese stocks. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>This investing legend has been predicting surprises for the last 37 years. Here\u2019s how he did last year \u2014 and what he\u2019s forecasting now<\/p>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      \u201cMultiple candidates on both sides of the aisle organize campaigns to secure their party\u2019s presidential nomination. There are new headliner names on the respective tickets for 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cThe Federal Reserve remains in a tug-of-war with inflation, so it puts the word \u201cpivot\u201d on the shelf alongside the word \u201ctransitory.\u201d The fed funds rate moves above the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index and real interest rates turn positive, a rare phenomenon relative to the last decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cWhile the Fed is successful in dampening inflation, it over-stays its time in restrictive territory. Margins are squeezed in a mild recession.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cDespite Fed tightening, the market reaches a bottom by mid-year and begins a recovery comparable to 2009.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cEvery significant correction in the market has in the past been accompanied by a financial \u201caccident.\u201d Cryptocurrencies had a major correction and that proved not to be a systemic event. This time, Modern Monetary Theory is fully discredited because deficits have proven to be inflationary.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cThe Fed remains more hawkish than other central banks, and the US dollar stays strong against major currency pairs, including the yen and euro. This creates a generational opportunity for dollar-based investors to invest in Japanese and European assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cChina edges toward its growth objective of 5.5% and works aggressively to re-establish strong trade relationships with the West, with positive implications for real assets and commodities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cThe US becomes not only the largest producer of oil, but also the friendliest supplier. The price of oil drops primarily as a result of a global recession, but also because of increased hydraulic fracking and greater production from the Middle East and Venezuela. The price of West Texas Intermediate crude touches $50 this year, but there\u2019s a $100 tick out there sometime beyond 2023 as the world recovers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cThe bombardment, destruction and casualties in Ukraine continue for the first half of 2023.
