{"id":5913,"date":"2023-10-27T09:53:10","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T09:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/iag-and-air-france-klm-report-record-summer-profits\/"},"modified":"2023-10-27T09:53:10","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T09:53:10","slug":"iag-and-air-france-klm-report-record-summer-profits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=5913","title":{"rendered":"IAG and Air France-KLM report record summer profits"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=b0ec4815-fcad-45e7-8471-7d64fb45b405\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>British Airways owner IAG and Air France-KLM became the latest airline groups to benefit from booming demand for leisure travel, as they reported record\u00a0profits over the summer.<\/p>\n<p>IAG on Friday reported\u00a0a 43 per cent increase in third-quarter operating profit before exceptional items to \u20ac1.75bn, its second consecutive quarter of record results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the third quarter we saw sustained strong demand across all our routes,\u201d said IAG chief executive Luis Gallego. <\/p>\n<p>The airline group, which also owns Aer Lingus and Iberia, reported particularly strong appetite for travel across the Atlantic and to leisure destinations in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rival Air-France KLM said its operating profit reached a record \u20ac1.34bn in the third quarter, up 31 per cent from a year earlier driven by strong summer bookings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The results from two of Europe\u2019s largest aviation groups underline the industry\u2019s rapid recovery from the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic. Low-cost airline easyJet has said it expects to report record profits over the summer, while London\u2019s Heathrow airport raised its passenger forecasts this week. <\/p>\n<p>However, the rise in the price of oil and growing geopolitical uncertainty have raised questions over the durability of the recovery, and airline shares have fallen since the summer. <\/p>\n<p>IAG said forward bookings were \u201cgood\u201d, but added it remained \u201cmindful of wider macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties that might affect the remainder of this year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Profits at airlines across Europe have been boosted by customers\u2019 willingness to pay high ticket prices for travel. IAG said passenger unit revenue \u2014 a measure of average revenues per kilometre flown which is seen by some people as a proxy for ticket prices \u2014 was 25 per cent higher than in 2019. <\/p>\n<p>That allowed the airline to report a jump in profit despite operating a smaller flight network than before the pandemic, which the company put down to the retirement of its high-capacity jumbo jets and the slow return of travel to Asia. The group expects to fly 96 per cent of 2019 capacity this year. <\/p>\n<p>Air-France KLM, which recently said it would take a 20 per cent stake in Scandinavian airline SAS, maintained its capacity outlook for the year at 95 per cent of 2019 levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Operating profits at Air France-KLM were slightly lower than the \u20ac1.37bn consensus forecast cited by analysts at Bernstein, while revenues of \u20ac8.66bn slightly undershot expectations as well.
