\n Columbia University has postponed its massive Giving Day fundraising event scheduled for Wednesday amid simmering tensions on campus over the Israel-Hamas war.\n <\/p>\n

\n Giving Day is a critical fundraising event for Columbia, as the university has noted endowment funding and tuition do not cover the entire cost of education. The annual event\u00a0raised nearly $30 million in just 24 hours\u00a0last year.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAfter careful consideration and consultation with University and alumni leadership, we decided that this is not the appropriate time to move forward with Columbia Giving Day,\u201d Columbia spokesperson Samantha Slater said in a statement. \u201cIt is postponed for the time being, and a decision on rescheduling will be made in the near future.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The Hamas terror attack on Israel and subsequent Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have caused tensions at college campuses across America and contributed to a\u00a0backlash from powerful donors\u00a0at some elite universities.\n <\/p>\n

\n At Columbia, school officials took the rare step earlier this month of shutting the campus down to the public as two simultaneous rallies were held on school grounds.\n <\/p>\n

\n That decision came after the assault of a Columbia student who was hanging up posters on campus in support of Israel.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cRight now, we know that the atmosphere on campus is extremely charged and many are concerned for their personal safety,\u201d Columbia officials said in a\u00a0statement\u00a0on October 12.\n <\/p>\n

\n Columbia President Minouche Shafik\u00a0issued a statement\u00a0urging the community to avoid language that \u201cvilifies, threatens or stereotypes entire groups of people,\u201d adding that this type of speech \u201cwill not be tolerated\u201d when it is unlawful or violates university rules.\n <\/p>\n

\n Shai Davidai, an assistant professor at the Columbia Business School,\u00a0delivered a fiery speech\u00a0last week calling Shafik a \u201ccoward\u201d for failing to quiet \u201cpro-terror\u201d voices at the school.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIf my amazing two-year-old daughter was now 18 years old, I would never, never, never send her to Columbia, not because it\u2019s not a great institution. It\u2019s an amazing institution. But because I know that she will not be protected there because the president of the university allows pro-terrorists to march on campus,\u201d Davidai said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Meanwhile, the donor backlash at the University of Pennsylvania continues.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Penn Alumni Club of Israel is now cutting ties with that Ivy League school in protest over\u00a0a Palestinian literature festival held on campus last month.\n <\/p>\n

\n In a statement on Tuesday, the alumni club of Israel <\/strong>said it is now \u201cformally disengaged\u201d from UPenn. The club said it will no longer provide information and data on alumni in Israel, communicate with universities or serve \u201cany functions\u201d within the alumni organization.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cBen\u00a0Franklin called America the New Jerusalem; Jerusalem is now calling out Ben\u2019s legacy for balefully losing its moral compass,\u201d former club co-presidents Dov Hoch and Dalia Hope Levine said in a statement. \u201cPenn\u2019s leadership\u00a0has\u00a0chiseled multiple higher education milestones into a tombstone of moral vacuity.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The Penn Alumni Club of Israel cited the Palestine Writes Literary Festival, which featured speakers who had a history of making antisemitic remarks, according to UPenn leaders.\n <\/p>\n

\n UPenn President Liz Magill condemned antisemitism broadly prior to the Palestine Writes Festival.\n <\/p>\n

\n However,\u00a0organizers and attendees tell CNN\u00a0the festival was aimed at celebrating and promoting Palestinian culture and Palestinians through music, art and literature. At the festival, some speakers denied allegations of antisemitism.\n <\/p>\n

\n Still, the Palestine Writes festival has been cited by a slew of powerful donors who have vowed to close their checkbooks to UPenn, including\u00a0\u201cLaw & Order\u201d creator Dick Wolf, former US Ambassador Jon Huntsman and hedge fund billionaire Cliff Asness. The donor backlash has been led by private equity billionaire Marc Rowan.\n <\/p>\n

\n According to an email forwarded by Rowan on Monday, venture capitalist Emil Woods informed Magill he can\u2019t continue donating to UPenn because school leaders have failed to \u201cextinguish the fomenting of hate\u201d during the current crisis.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cPenn was a sanctuary for me. But today nothing could be further from the truth for students. Penn has failed students, left them hiding with their feeling of safety shattered,\u201d Woods wrote in the email forwarded by Rowan.\n <\/p>\n

\n Woods did not respond to requests for comment.\n <\/p>\n

\n George Washington University said in a statement Wednesday that it will be conducting a review after a group of individuals projected several pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli messages onto a campus building in Washington, DC, Tuesday night.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe projections on the university\u2019s library violated university policy, and leadership intervened to ensure that these projections were removed,\u201d the statement read.\n <\/p>\n

\n Social media posts of the incident show individuals projecting messages onto a campus wall reading \u201cdivestment from Zionist genocide now,\u201d \u201cfree Palestine from the river to the sea,\u201d \u201cglory to our martyrs,\u201d and \u201cGW the blood of Palestinians is on your hands.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n According to one video shared by the advocacy group @StopAntisemitism, a group of individuals sat on the ground behind their projector and refused to comply when asked by police to remove the messages.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe statements made by these individuals in no way reflect the views of the university. We are reviewing this incident and will take any appropriate steps with respect to the individuals involved in accordance with university policies,\u201d the university said.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe recognize the distress, hurt, and pain this has caused for many members of our community,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cThe university will continue to communicate with all members of its community about the support resources available during this difficult time.\u201d\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
