{"id":6827,"date":"2023-10-29T20:13:16","date_gmt":"2023-10-29T20:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/ken-griffin-and-eric-schmidt-invest-10mn-each-in-uk-genetics-database\/"},"modified":"2023-10-29T20:13:16","modified_gmt":"2023-10-29T20:13:16","slug":"ken-griffin-and-eric-schmidt-invest-10mn-each-in-uk-genetics-database","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=6827","title":{"rendered":"Ken Griffin and Eric Schmidt invest $10mn each in UK genetics database"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=20badecd-0e25-4526-8b8e-6870a566163e\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The pioneering UK Biobank genetics database has won donations of $10mn each from former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt and billionaire investor Ken Griffin, highlighting the excitement about its potential to yield breakthroughs in combating diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The funding, which is due to be announced on Monday, will be matched by the UK government and used to leverage more investments in the 17-year-old project with its record half a million participants. <\/p>\n<p>The donations are a sign of the interest of medical researchers, drugs companies and other observers in the biobank, which is an unusually rich information source to investigate conditions from cardiac disorders to Alzheimer\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUK Biobank is revolutionising our understanding and treatment of disease,\u201d said Griffin, of\u00a0Citadel hedge fund and market maker Citadel Securities, who has provided more than $2bn to philanthropic efforts, including those focused on\u00a0science and medicine. \u201cI am honoured to support this groundbreaking initiative to advance scientific discoveries, improve public health and save lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The government hopes the donations from Griffin and Schmidt will entice further investments in the biobank from private donors and other sources.<\/p>\n<p>The money could be used for projects such as deploying artificial intelligence to analyse cancer samples.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to unlock a new wave of private and philanthropic donations, right across our science and tech sectors,\u201d said Michelle Donelan, secretary of state for science, innovation and technology. \u201cTo have two titans of business such as Eric Schmidt and Ken Griffin join us at the start of this exciting journey is testament to our scientific capabilities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Donelan revealed earlier this year that the government was talking to Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative of Schmidt and his wife Wendy, about a donation of up to $20mn. Schmidt said it was \u201cvital\u201d to support \u201crevolutionary applications of science and technology\u201d such as the UK Biobank.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The government unveiled plans earlier this year for \u00a3150mn of investment in the biobank, whose data has already been used by drugs companies including AstraZeneca and Johnson &amp; Johnson. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals partnered with a consortium of businesses to fund exome sequencing of biobank data. This promises to offer insights into how mutations of known genes can cause medical problems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next month the biobank will release the results of the whole genome sequencing of all its half million participants, a project funded by a public-private consortium.<\/p>\n<p>The biobank is attractive to researchers because it is \u201cuniquely placed\u201d globally in its \u201cdepth, scale and duration\u201d, said Sir Rory Collins, the organisation\u2019s chief executive.
