{"id":6920,"date":"2023-10-30T03:38:35","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T03:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/colombias-leftist-president-dealt-blow-in-local-elections\/"},"modified":"2023-10-30T03:38:35","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T03:38:35","slug":"colombias-leftist-president-dealt-blow-in-local-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=6920","title":{"rendered":"Colombia\u2019s leftist president dealt blow in local elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=dc29e796-484f-4921-bd5f-ddea85b4a201\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Colombia\u2019s leftist president Gustavo Petro has been dealt a blow in local elections, with opposition candidates sweeping polls for mayor, governor and councillor across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Voters in all of Colombia\u2019s major cities, including the capital Bogot\u00e1, rejected Petro\u2019s allies in mayoral races on Sunday, while only two of 32 provinces elected governors backed by his Historic Pact coalition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our duty as leaders to respect the voice of the people,\u201d Petro, Colombia\u2019s first leftist leader, said in a speech that largely focused on the peaceful conduct of the election following the announcement of the results. \u201cWe will work to articulate [the winning candidates\u2019] campaign proposals so we can together build a country that fights corruption, injustice and faces the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carlos Fernando Gal\u00e1n, a centrist former senator with some opposition support, was elected mayor of Bogot\u00e1, considered the country\u2019s second most important political post. Gustavo Bol\u00edvar, a staunch ally of the president who placed third, described the result as a \u201cpunishment vote\u201d for the government.<\/p>\n<p>In Medell\u00edn, Colombia\u2019s second city and an opposition stronghold, former mayor Federico Guti\u00e9rrez replaced a Petro ally. Guti\u00e9rrez, a fierce critic of Petro who previously led the city from 2016 to 2019, contested the presidential race last year.<\/p>\n<p>Petro, who in his youth was an organiser in the leftist-nationalist M-19 guerrilla group, promised to wean Colombia off oil and transform its economic orthodoxy when he took office in August last year.<\/p>\n<p>But since passing progressive tax reform last December, his polarising plans to overhaul health, pension and labour laws have struggled to gain cross-party support in congress, despite his coalition\u2019s significant blocs in both houses. His popularity rating is just 32 per cent, according to local pollster Invamer, down from 56 per cent when he took office.<\/p>\n<p>Petro\u2019s government and family have also been embroiled in scandal, with his son Nicol\u00e1s, who is also a politician, arrested in July on money laundering charges amid a probe into the presidential campaign\u2019s finances. <\/p>\n<p>The government has also been rattled by a scandal involving Petro\u2019s former chief of staff and former campaign manager over allegations of wiretapping a former nanny.<\/p>\n<p>A cabinet reshuffle in April replaced centrists, including the respected finance minister Jos\u00e9 Antonio Ocampo, with allies of the president.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said Sunday\u2019s results were unlikely to compel the president, whose administration as mayor of Bogot\u00e1 was marked by similar dysfunction, to curb his ambitions.
