{"id":7659,"date":"2023-10-31T16:47:57","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T16:47:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/germanys-liberals-under-pressure-to-pull-out-of-ruling-coalition\/"},"modified":"2023-10-31T16:47:57","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T16:47:57","slug":"germanys-liberals-under-pressure-to-pull-out-of-ruling-coalition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=7659","title":{"rendered":"Germany\u2019s liberals under pressure to pull out of ruling coalition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Simply sign up to the <!-- -->German politics<!-- --> myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=02820600-bd80-4627-a3b9-355b7f6478e4&amp;concept-id=0248d815-2074-4259-9848-806189cbecaa\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Pressure is growing on Germany\u2019s liberals to pull out of the country\u2019s fractious coalition government, as voters threaten an electoral wipeout for the party.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, 26 regional and metropolitan party leaders wrote to FDP chair Christian Lindner, who is also Germany\u2019s finance minister, urging him to leave the three way \u201ctraffic light\u201d coalition under chancellor Olaf Scholz.<\/p>\n<p>Support for the FDP has haemorrhaged in recent months, with many voters perceiving the party as the \u201closer\u201d in Scholz\u2019s government amid a faltering economy and the war in Ukraine, with little evidence of its pro-business, small-government credo in action. <\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Greens, led by vice-chancellor Robert Habeck, and Scholz\u2019s Social Democrats have dominated the agenda, championing interventionist measures such as a ban on gas boilers and industrial subsidies which are deeply unpopular with FDP supporters.<\/p>\n<p>The FDP was kicked out of Bavaria\u2019s state parliament altogether on October 8, after it failed to cross the 5 per cent threshold necessary for parties to hold parliamentary seats. In neighbouring Hesse it only just scraped in. <\/p>\n<p>Given these \u201csignificant losses\u201d, the letter from regional liberal leaders reads, \u201cthe FDP must urgently reconsider its coalition partners\u201d. Being part of a coalition government will lead to \u201cthe imminent demise of the only liberal party in Germany\u201d, they claim.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at an event held by the Rheinische Post newspaper in D\u00fcsseldorf on Monday evening, Lindner defended the FDP\u2019s record and did not rule out quitting the coalition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere may already come a point where I say: it is better not to govern than to govern wrongly,\u201d he said. Spending too much time with Green politicians, he joked, was \u201cnot good for karma\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>First elected as a regional MP at the age of 21, Lindner, now 44, remains popular among the party\u2019s base but has limited options for manoeuvre, say experts.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\"  width=\"2100\" height=\"1400\"><\/source><source media=\"(max-width: 490px)\"  width=\"1503\" height=\"1498\"><\/source><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/https:\/\/d1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net\/production\/79aa33a4-1435-4f30-bbd0-309a93b83b63.jpg\" alt=\"Photo showing German economy minister Robert Habeck, finance minister Christian Lindner and chancellor Olaf Scholz \" data-image-type=\"image\" width=\"2100\" height=\"1400\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"n-content-picture__caption\"><span>From left, German economy minister Robert Habeck, finance minister Christian Lindner and chancellor Olaf Scholz attend a session in the German Bundestag<\/span><span> <!-- -->\u00a9 Christoph Soeder\/dpa<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe [signatories] are expressing a widespread feeling among FDP members and followers,\u201d said J\u00fcrgen Falter, a political scientist at the university of Mainz. \u201cBut in some ways their concerns are irrelevant because there is no real alternative for the FDP at the moment [than to stay in government].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s slide in the polls will probably lead to a hardening of its policies, Falter said.<\/p>\n<p>Recent weeks have already seen the party take an increasingly strident stance on immigration. On Sunday, Lindner and justice minister Marco Buschmann, who is also an FDP member, penned an article in the Welt am Sonntag newspaper calling for a \u201creduction of benefits to zero\u201d for asylum seekers who should have filed their applications in other EU countries. <\/p>\n<p>Under the bloc\u2019s rules, migrants can be returned to the first EU country they set foot on which should be responsible for their registration. But in practice, many asylum seekers turn up in Germany without a record of where they initially landed.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration has become a key issue for the FDP since many of its supporters switched to the two rightwing opposition parties with the hardest stance on it: the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) and the far right Alternative for Germany (AfD). <\/p>\n<p>The most recent federal polling puts support for the CDU at 30 per cent and AfD at 21 per cent. The FDP distantly trails with just 5 per cent, down from the 10.7 per cent it won in the 2021 election. <\/p>\n<p>As such, the party is currently on track to see this month\u2019s disaster in Bavaria repeated nationwide, potentially depriving the FDP \u2014 the party with the single longest record in government in postwar democratic Germany \u2014 of any parliamentary seats at all. The next federal elections are scheduled for October 2025 but if the coalition collapsed, there could be early elections. <\/p>\n<p>The FDP was kicked out of the Bundestag before, in 2013, when it fell below the 5 per cent threshold for the first time in its history \u2014 a shocking result that led to a clear-out of the party\u2019s leadership \u2014 and the accession of Lindner to the top job. <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest hindrance the FDP faces is that it has few tangible policy victories of its own it can sell.
