{"id":7801,"date":"2023-10-31T23:00:08","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T23:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/us-media-veterans-back-new-trading-firm-with-financial-news-arm\/"},"modified":"2023-10-31T23:00:08","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T23:00:08","slug":"us-media-veterans-back-new-trading-firm-with-financial-news-arm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=7801","title":{"rendered":"US media veterans back new trading firm with financial news arm"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Simply sign up to the <!-- -->Financial services<!-- --> myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=8550d1fe-569b-479c-b5b3-622716eda167&amp;concept-id=a829e170-bd47-44e2-b504-bafcd70f1d38\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>A group of veteran US financial journalists is teaming up with investors to launch a trading firm that is designed to trade on market-moving news unearthed by its own investigative reporting.<\/p>\n<p>The business, founded by investor Nathaniel Brooks Horwitz and writer Sam Koppelman, would comprise two entities: a trading fund and a group of analysts and journalists producing stories based on publicly available material, according to several people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The fund would place trades before articles were published, and then publish its research and trading thesis, they said, but would not trade on information that was not publicly available.<\/p>\n<p>The start-up, called Hunterbrook, had raised $10mn in seed funding and is targeting a $100mn launch for its fund, according to two people involved. <\/p>\n<p>Matt Murray, the former editor-in-chief of The Wall Street Journal, is acting as an adviser through his role with Outside the Box Investments, one of the company\u2019s investors. Hunterbrook and Murray declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>In an early message to potential investors, seen by the Financial Times, Horwitz said the investment fund would get \u201cunique access\u201d to articles before they are published. \u201cRather than try to predict or react to events, we time trades on news we break ourselves,\u201d he wrote, styling the venture as \u201cthe first trading fund driven by a global publication\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The reporting team \u2014 which Horwitz\u2019s email said would include journalists from the WSJ, BBC and Barron\u2019s as well as \u201cintel analysts\u201d \u2014 aims to publish market-moving investigative pieces \u201clike Bloomberg\u201d, but with no advertisements or subscription paywall.<\/p>\n<p>The fund would trade stocks, options, currencies, commodities and other assets, Horwitz told potential backers. <\/p>\n<p>Its investors include founders of General Catalyst, Avenue Capital and RA Capital Management, according to his email, as well as a former US solicitor general and quantitative traders from funds including Jane Street, Balyasny Asset Management and Millennium Management. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8550d1fe-569b-479c-b5b3-622716eda167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stay informed with free updates Simply sign up to the Financial services myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.
