{"id":8111,"date":"2023-11-01T13:31:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-01T13:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/hitler-wine-part-of-investigation-into-german-far-right-politician\/"},"modified":"2023-11-01T13:31:52","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T13:31:52","slug":"hitler-wine-part-of-investigation-into-german-far-right-politician","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=8111","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Hitler wine\u2019 part of investigation into German far-right politician"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Unlock the Editor\u2019s Digest for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\"><span>Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=e073ffb2-54f4-491d-810c-5538ea229bea\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Prosecutors have released fresh details of their investigation into the newly elected far-right German politician Daniel Halemba, including the possession of Nazi literature, weaponry, SS devotional items and a picture of people consuming \u2018Hitler wine\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>Halemba, 22, won a seat in Bavaria\u2019s parliament earlier this month as part of a surge in political support for the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is now the largest party of opposition in the state. <\/p>\n<p>AfD is also now the second most popular party in polls nationwide, having eclipsed chancellor Olaf Scholz\u2019s Social Democrats during the summer.\u00a0More than one in five Germans say they will vote for the party. <\/p>\n<p>Halemba was arrested on Monday and faces charges of possession of Nazi material \u2014 which is considered a crime against the German state, and carries a prison sentence of up to five years. A court released him shortly afterwards, on the grounds that he did not pose a flight risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He has been in the sights of prosecutors from the city of W\u00fcrzburg, where he was a student, since a police raid on the rightwing fraternity, Teutonia Prag there in mid September.<\/p>\n<p>W\u00fcrzburg prosecutors released details of the warrant \u2014 and the case against Halemba they are building \u2014 on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>In the fraternity\u2019s guest book Halemba is alleged to have signed his name with the Nazi salutation \u201cSieg Heil!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his bedroom at the fraternity, police found a printout of a historic SS order signed by Heinrich Himmler, the Nazi commander who was a leading architect of the Holocaust.\u00a0Weapons, including a machete, batons, knives, a knuckle duster and a disarmed gun were also confiscated.<\/p>\n<p>A picture obtained by police showed fraternity members enjoying a bottle of \u2018Hitler wine\u2019 \u2014 a product made until last year by the small Italian winery Vini Lunardelli, featuring the Nazi dictator on its label, which has become a fetish object for rightwing extremists across Europe. A bottle was most recently confiscated in Austria as part of a huge trove of Nazi memorabilia and weaponry in June. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors did not specify whether the bottle in the fraternity picture had been Halemba\u2019s or if it had been found. <\/p>\n<p>Halemba\u2019s lawyer, Dubravko Mandic, said that \u201cnone of the items in question can be connected with my client.\u201d Mandic said the case was politically motivated. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said there is more material they have yet to analyse, including the contents of Halemba\u2019s phone and that of four other Teutonia Prag members.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday Halemba defiantly took up his seat in the Bavarian Landtag alongside 31 other AfD deputies. The party has so far stood resolutely behind him.
