Apple Inc. Chief Executive Tim Cook says his company is \u201cinvesting quite a bit\u201d in generative artificial intelligence, the AI technology popularized by OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

But as for how company plans to use the technology? Cook was typically tight-lipped while talking on Apple\u2019s

\n earnings call late Thursday.<\/p>\n

Cook\u2019s comments came in response to a question from an analyst, who wondered if the company would look to monetize its coming Vision Pro headset or other initiatives using generative AI, as other companies step up their own experimentations. <\/p>\n

Apple plans to approach generative AI \u201cresponsibly,\u201d according to Cook, and fans of the company\u2019s devices \u201cwill see product advancements over time where those technologies are at the heart of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

AI chatter has cooled a little on Big Tech earnings calls, though executives of other tech powerhouses are still talking about the technology far more than Apple\u2019s management is. AI came up 57 times on Microsoft Corp.\u2019s
\n MSFT,
\n +0.65%<\/bg-quote>
\n earnings call last week, down from 73 times on the prior call, while the count on Alphabet Inc.\u2019s
\n GOOG,
\n +0.79%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n

GOOGL,
\n +0.82%<\/bg-quote>
\n call fell to 75 from 90. <\/p>\n

AI mentions actually rose to nine from five in Apple\u2019s case, but all of those references occurred during the question-and-answer portion, whereas the Alphabet and Microsoft management teams didn\u2019t need any prompting to discuss AI, and essentially led their prepared remarks with talk of the technology. <\/p>\n

Cook\u2019s responses Thursday echoed commentary from Apple\u2019s prior earnings call, during which he told an analyst curious about the company\u2019s AI efforts that Apple tends \u201cto announce things as they come to market.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted Thursday that plenty of Apple features already make use of AI, though the company doesn\u2019t necessarily frame them that way publicly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe view AI and machine learning as fundamental technologies, and they\u2019re integral to virtually every product that we ship,\u201d he said. New iOS features like Personal Voice and Live Voicemail \u201cwould not be possible without AI,\u201d but Apple \u201clabeled them as what their consumer benefit is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
