{"id":9589,"date":"2023-11-04T14:34:59","date_gmt":"2023-11-04T14:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/business\/how-the-spritz-became-the-cocktail-of-the-moment\/"},"modified":"2023-11-04T14:35:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-04T14:35:00","slug":"how-the-spritz-became-the-cocktail-of-the-moment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infundpros.com\/?p=9589","title":{"rendered":"How the spritz became the \u2018cocktail of the moment\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloehr94g001k46qn4o3t6hw7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Martinis and margaritas might still be people\u2019s drink of choice, but the spritz is bubbling to the top.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloehyhjj00023b6iiq8uzf32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      A spritz, a refreshing cocktail that mixes Prosecco, club soda and a (usually Italian) liqueur like Campari or Aperol, has grown so much in popularity this year that it has entered the top 10 list of most-ordered\u00a0cocktails\u00a0at US bars, according to research firm CGA by NIQ.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloei7asr00073b6ixxvxunr8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      It\u2019s the first time the spritz has made an appearance on the list, thanks in part because it\u2019s no longer thought of as a summer drink and it\u2019s easy to customize.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeifb5b00093b6i4txzv8gb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Bartenders are experimenting so much with the spritz, swapping in different liqueurs or juices in place of Campari or Aperol, that it\u2019s becoming the \u201ccocktail for the moment\u201d and expanding its appeal year-round, a recent report from bar analytics service Union said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeikwn2000f3b6i2fpqxlnh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cBy all accounts, the spritz has had a smashing year, showing strong growth across every month, peaking smack-dab in the middle of summer,\u201d Union said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeit0jj000k3b6ib7ikdg3k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Data shows that spritz sales started growing in sales this year a month earlier \u2014 in April \u2014 than usual. Even in January, the spritz\u2019s slowest month, sales were \u201cmore than double\u201d compared to the previous January.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloeit4yj000m3b6ihdq5kdkj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The spritz\u2019s colorful appeal is that it also fits in \u201cwith many other consumer trends,\u201d CGA by NIQ regional director, Matthew Crompton, told CNN, pointing out that the cocktails are low in alcohol, easy to drink a few of in one sitting and they\u2019re fun to show off on TikTok and Instagram.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloejpojc00113b6it4wgmxzw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Low and no-alcohol cocktails and mocktails have grown in popularity in recent years as drinkers look to regulate their alcohol intake. Sales of the category rose 15% last year according to a report from IWSR Drinks Market Analysis.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloej4bz9000r3b6iyypxynz4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      And there\u2019s a Jennifer Coolidge connection, too: The spritz has seen sales rise following its constant appearances on HBO\u2019s \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d giving it \u201ccultural credibility,\u201d the Union report<strong> <\/strong>noted.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloej78is000t3b6is80tpb06@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Gruppo Campari, which also produces Aperol, revealed in a recent earnings report that US sales grew 9.1% for the first nine months of 2023, with the two Italian liqueurs continuing to be its top-selling alcohol brands.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloejh34g000v3b6iz83xcphf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In addition to people increasingly drinking cocktails low in alcohol, Campari executive Andrea Sengara also credited the rise in Italian culture and enjoying an \u201caperitivo\u201d is why the brand has had success in the US.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloejjufp000x3b6i8mrtt6be@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cAmerican consumers, like others globally, are becoming more aware and attracted to the aperitivo ritual, which represents taking a moment to slow down and enjoy time with friends,\u201d Sengara told CNN. \u201cWe\u2019ve also noticed that consumer palates have started to evolve and shift from a preference for sweet tastes to a growing appreciation for bitter flavors.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloejma3x000z3b6ih7zzja16@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      She also credits increased advertising and sponsorships, including at the Coachella music festival in California and the US Open tennis tournament, as helping raise awareness for the Italian-owned brand.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloekta9k001k3b6i88do6ezt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      That has bolstered sales: Shipments of Aperol to the US rose from just 9,000 cases in 2010 to 390,000 cases last year, according to data provided by the company. Campari shipped 227,000 cases in 2022, more than double its 2015 volume.\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cloenw1vv000g3b6iecjrjhlv@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"shutterstock_editorial_14087744aw.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6665\" data-original-height=\"1333\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/shutterstock-editorial-14087744aw.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 480px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(max-width: 479px)\"  type=\"image\/webp\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloejtyim00133b6i8g1808qr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Campari and Aperol are the market leaders, but that didn\u2019t scare Amante 1530, a new Italian liqueur that has music icon Sting on its founding team, from recently launching.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloek3zdn00153b6i7ogpz677@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The Campari group \u201cdrove a really hard and targeted marketing campaign focused on making the spritz ubiquitous,\u201d Amante 1530 cofounder and CEO Ana Rosenstein told CNN. \u201cThis was a huge factor in our recognizing that this category, this pie, could be so much bigger.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloek89rt00193b6ifwy0odjh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Compared to Campari and Aperol, Amante 1530 has lower alcohol by volume, less sugar and of a more subtle finish that is an \u201calternative to the consumer,\u201d she said. The drink is currently available at select New York restaurants and retailers for $34.99 for a 700ml bottle, around the same price<strong> <\/strong>as<strong> <\/strong>Campari.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloel193u00043b6ilm3h8tyg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cFor people\u00a0who maybe weren\u2019t sold on the currently available options, we hope we can open it up to them with a product that maybe matches their flavor profile a bit more,\u201d she added.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloekbqyh001b3b6ikyfa5w6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Just scrolling on TikTok, Rosenstein notices different variations of a spritz (such as a Hugo spritz, made with St-Germain elderflower liqueur, or a Lillet spritz made with the wine-based liqueur) in her feed.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloemj4a200063b6i85nhubz6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Despite the differences among the brands, they both would agree that spritzes aren\u2019t going flat anytime soon.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloekd0t0001d3b6i8aulbs36@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cEveryone wants to put their own twist on a cocktail when they make it or when they lean over the bar to order it with that sultry confidence,\u201d she said. \u201cThe spritz category is growing at a pace similar to that of the entire category and becoming more intricate in just the same way.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/04\/business\/spritz-cocktail-popularity\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Martinis and margaritas might still be people\u2019s drink of choice, but the spritz is bubbling to the top.
